WSJ’s Nicole Nguyen sits down with Apple’s VP of Health to discuss the company’s recently announced Apple Watches with more advanced sensors and a major overhaul of its Health app.

Apple Health Chief Knows the Health App Needs Work

The Health app is not as good.

Have you heard that feedback?

Oh yeah, we have that feedback ourselves.

Yes, Apple's health chief knows the company's Health app needs work. They're betting on a slate of newly unveiled updates to help the iPhone and WatchMaker stay on top of the health company's nipping at their heels like Oura and Whoop. That includes a new AI infused Health app redesign with more proactive recommendations and an Apple Watch algorithm update for frustrated knitters. I sat down with the company's VP of health at Apple Park to ask her about these new health features and the company's health strategy. I'm a longtime Apple Watch reviewer and one of the pros has always been end-to-end encryption of health data very unique to Apple. And one of the cons has always been the Health app is not as good. A lot of numbers, not a lot to what to do with those numbers. Have you heard that feedback?

Oh yeah, we have that feedback ourselves. The Health app actually started, the origin story of the Health app was actually never to be an experience. It was actually a repository for health kit data. And so we enabled it for our developers, our first and third party, our first party products, but our third party developers to have a place to have all of your data in one place. And we started doing things like trends and over time, but it never really felt like an experience to any of us. But we wanted to kind of create a holistic experience and we obsess about the details so it takes us time. So we're really proud of what we came out this year. We've got the Today tab that now has a dashboard view of your data. Even the metrics we've put together are different than we've done before. And a lot more proactive suggestions on how you can improve health outcomes.

We've talked about really wanting to be actionable and I don't feel like we're meeting that the way we wanted to. And so now what we're doing is we're integrating your data along with proactive suggestions and little bite size insights every day because we all know our health journey kind of goes up and down. So we wanted to meet it, meet people where they're at.

Is there an example that you can share from something maybe you've gotten from the Health app? Something actionable?

I am recovering from an injury and I'm a runner and my VO2 max has not been where it needs to be lately. My cardio fitness has dropped. And so what I found really actionable is some more insights around ramping up intensity to make sure that your VO2 max is growing, improving because a lot of times it's not just about doing more activity, it's about hitting the right level of intensity. And so those are examples of things that we're hoping our customers can benefit from because it's those types of nuances that are really important for people to walk away from.

Do you see the Health app as rising to the level of something that would require a subscription eventually?

So the way I look at subscriptions is not necessarily a product has to rise to the level of subscription. I look at it, we look at it a little differently. We don't look at it from that perspective. We look at how do we have the most impact at scale? How are we doing things that we can provide for our customers at a broad scale? It's less about when I look at it, you know, oh, it's, it needs to be this in order for me to charge for it. Because a lot of people are charging for things that we actually already provide, candidly. Like heart rate data isn't something that we charge for. We don't believe you should charge for it, it's your data, but others have different opinions on it. So we really look at it, honestly, we focus on what we want to do for customers and just given our ecosystem, we're really focused on how do we have the whole ecosystem support your overall health.

Going to the watch now, I've heard that knitters, some knitters are frustrated that aggressive stitching might mistakenly be counted as steps and that there's an update that that community would be happy about.

Well, that's good to know because I have a family of people who knit, so I'm glad that this is gonna be something that's stressed. Yeah, we, as you know, introduced, we recently ran a study where we have the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, which we're really proud of. Given that heart rate is kind of the fundamental along with some of the other sensors enable us to be able to measure steps, we have some more, we have some algorithms that are updating kind of our steps algorithm that should hopefully address some of that and we have more to come too, so.

What about stroller walking? This has been a huge pain point for me.

We now will be able to pick that up. So when you are pushing a stroller, you will get credit for as we should because we know pushing strollers are hard. And so that too will be incorporated in the data that you're going to see.

What about blood pressure tracking? You know, where are we on that?

Well, we announced hypertension notifications last year and hypertension notifications basically look at how blood is flowing through your vessels and we are able to detect changes that correlate with your stages of blood pressure. So we notify you after you wear your watch for a period of time, we'll be able to notify you if we see signs of stage one or stage two hypertension. We are not providing an actual number. It's much more of like a pre-screening device because that's where we feel like science is today.

Can you tell me more about health age and what you were thinking about? It does seem like some of these longevity features villainizes aging. What should people take away from health age?

What you should really take away from health age is we want you to live your best life possible for as long as you can. And so a lot of that is how well you live your life, not just how long you live, right? And so by no means is it meant to vilify, it's actually meant to encourage you to live your most active, healthiest life. And so a lot of what we focus on are what are the key habits that are important that enable, you know, long, healthy life.
