Poland is on high alert after a series of hybrid attacks targeting its critical civilian infrastructure. The key NATO hub is now scrambling to protect one of its weakest points: its energy grid.

As Russian Sabotage Ramps Up, Poland Prepares for a War on Energy

Breaking news out of Poland. The military there are accusing Moscow of an act of aggression after Polish and NATO forces scrambled to shoot down Russian drones that violated its airspace.

Reporter: Tomasz and his wife Ally's house was destroyed after Russian drones was shot down over their village in Poland, near to the border of Ukraine. European officials say the drone incursions are part of a wider Russian shadow war designed to destabilize the continent. From railway damage to arson, Poland civilian infrastructure has been targeted, leaving the country scrambling to protect its most critical network, its energy grid.

We've got more than 60,000 kilometers of power lines and more than 110 power stations. If we haven't got any electricity, the society collapse.

Reporter: Daniel Wagner is the head of security for Poland State Energy grid, PSE. He says the power network has already been targeted.

Threats are coming from the east. We find multiple places had partially cut electrical poles. It's the best way to treat an enemy. We've hit the energy system. It's like a nervous system of our body. Without electricity and electric system, there is nothing.

Reporter: Russia has denied any involvement in acts of sabotage. But Poland, the critical hub for moving NATO weapons into Ukraine, is preparing for network disruption.

One drone can hit the line, for example, and can cause short circuit. We are always prepared for losing one line. Three, four lines, could be more, yes, could be more dangerous.

PSE says it is learning these lessons from Ukraine, where Russia has been targeting the energy grid.

Journalist: Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure have plunged millions into darkness, cold, and water shortages.

Reporter: PSE is now preparing its own infrastructure for a potential war. Its main control room is already in an underground nuclear bunker, and it uses specialist equipment, like helicopters and cameras, to monitor the grid and check for threats from sabotage to surveillance operations.

You can see how the Russians operate right now. The hybrid war is very intense. So we can expect that they can test the critical infrastructure, the power grid. This is Kozienice. Kozienice power plant. A big one. It can happen tomorrow. It can happen within a month or within, you know, a year. We don't know, nobody knows. But you can definitely say that they following a kind of checklist, like, it goes like point by point, bullet by bullet.

Reporter: PSE is also developing its surveillance drone capabilities, adding more helicopters to its fleet, and is enhancing its cybersecurity systems. The company is also preparing its workers for how to deal with the increased risk of hybrid threats.

Reporter: In December, PSE formalized a strategic partnership with Poland's Armed Forces, and if war was to break out, the company's critical workers would be militarized. Not to fight on the front, but to ensure the nation's vital systems don't go dark. But PSE says it needs more funding to be able to fully protect its facilities and keep the entire country running. Civilians in the villages already hit by drone incursions fear it could happen again. One of the drones came down near Tomasz Wieczorek's home.

Reporter: Now Tomasz and other villagers are trying to take their security into their own hands.

Reporter: Poland's Ministry of Defense did not respond to a request for comment. While some are racing to protect their infrastructure from the increasing threats, for others, it is already too late.
