Chief Tiffany’s Inferno

I first met Chief Michael Tiffany about 25 years ago.

I was a union delegate in Bronx Narcotics, and he was the boss. After we finished our union business, he asked me a surprising question, "Do you remember in the 'Inferno,' when Dante and Virgil are about to enter the seventh circle of Hell, and the stench is so bad, they have to wait before going on?" I said, "Uh, yes, Chief."

It was the beginning of the whole speech he gave me on the difficulty and nobility of police work, about how we have to go to some pretty dark places.

One of the darkest of days was September 11th, 2001.

I was at work that morning in my detective squad in the South Bronx when we heard the news. Immediately, we were ordered to get into uniform and wait to be told what to do.

My partner and I actually had to sneak down to Ground Zero where we joined the bucket brigade, hoisting pails of rubble from the pile in the hope of finding survivors. It was an unreal sight, shattered buildings, twisted metal, white dust everywhere. The air had a sour smell. The phrase Dante uses for the stench from the seventh circle is "tristo fiato." Sometimes it's translated as "dismal breath" or "foul air."

Chief Tiffany, being a chief, didn't wait for orders. He just grabbed a bunch of guys from Bronx Narcotics and went down there, trying to organize the response.

We stayed close, we stayed friends. And years later, I heard that he was sick.

23 NYPD officers were killed on 9/11, and another 469 have died since of 9/11-related illnesses.

There is research showing that neurological conditions, Parkinson's or dementia, like Chief Tiffany has, is associated with exposure to 9/11 toxins. At present, they do not qualify for the 9/11 First Responder Victim Compensation Fund.

The first time I visited Chief Tiffany after his diagnosis, he was still himself.

The second time, he really wasn't there. His wife asked me not to go back for a third time.

For Dante, the descent into Hell was the first leg of a journey that ends in Paradise. For us 9/11 first responders, we can only hope.
