China’s Xi Jinping Makes Rare Visit to Meet Kim Jong Un. Why Now?

This is Xi's first trip to Pyongyang in nearly seven years, and this marks a very significant time in China-North Korea relations. In recent weeks, he's met President Trump, Vladimir Putin. This signifies not only the to-dos on China's side, but it also signifies the rise of North Korea. Xi and Kim met last fall for a military parade in Beijing. Kim, it was a surprise that he had gone to China. Kim Jong-Un has drawn very close to Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, in recent years. Pyongyang is a key supplier of munitions. It sent troops to the Russian front lines. This makes China uncomfortable. China wants stability in the world.

North Korea pulled out all the stops, red carpet treatment for Xi, and that really points to how important the relationship is between North Korea and China. Xi has multiple objectives for this visit to North Korea. He wants to cooperate, collaborate, most importantly, he wants control. Ahead of Xi's visit, he had an editorial run in North Korea's main newspaper where he called for more multipolarity, more stability across the world. This shows how important North Korea is to that new global order. North Korea has nuclear weapons, its economy is thriving. Right before Xi came to Pyongyang, Kim was visiting a munitions factory in North Korea, and this is just the latest sign of the world's inability to reign in Kim Jong-Un's weapons, dreams, and desires. He has a nuclear arsenal that's growing. He has weapons that target South Korea and Japan, the US' big allies in the region, in an unfettered way. Pyongyang doesn't just have to take messages from Beijing at this point. This is the challenge for Xi during this visit. Can he convince North Korea to stop doing the things that give China unease, like supplying Russia's war machines, sending troops to the Russian front lines, openly flouting sanctions, refusing to meet with Donald Trump unless nuclear weapons are off the table. We're in a moment now where the US-led world order is being questioned. Increased collaboration between China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea has been a major concern by the US and the West. During Trump's first term, he met three times with Kim Jong-Un. He had nuclear summits in Singapore and Vietnam. There was a third meeting at the Korean DMZ. But the US and North Korea have not held formal talks in more than six years. Xi and Trump just met a few weeks ago in Beijing, and Trump has repeatedly stated a desire to meet again with Kim Jong-Un. China would like North Korea to see the merits of having diplomacy with the US, but Pyongyang has made itself very clear. Its status as a nuclear state is irreversible. And this is where the Russia relationship to Kim Jong-Un is key. Vladimir Putin is willing to give Pyongyang things that Xi and China would not, and that includes know-how on all types of weaponry that North Korea is looking to advance. North Korea does not like that it is so reliant on China and any way to diversify its relationship, economically, politically, or militarily, is welcomed by Pyongyang. Xi recognizes and perhaps is uncomfortable with how close North Korea and Russia have gotten. Once Xi Jin Ping leaves North Korea on Tuesday, the US and the West will be very focused to see how much influence did he actually have on North Korea and Kim. They know he's got sway, but we'll have to see how much in the weeks and months ahead.
