Constellation CEO on Nuclear Energy's Bipartisan Support

Nuclear, I thought that whole business was dead, not working out, not going on. But you guys are a big player. Tell us the state of the nuclear business. A lot of people talking about a nuclear renaissance going on as well.

You know, I'll talk about it a couple ways, Andy. In terms of the public's receptivity and political receptivity to nuclear at an all time high, I would argue that nuclear today garners more bipartisan support than almost any other technology. It's truly a purple technology. So that has changed. We always had elemental support within the Republican party, but the climate crisis issues made Democrats really appreciate nuclear. And what we're seeing is really an explosion of interest in nuclear across the board and many new different technologies, very advanced technologies, all the way to things that are iterations of what we do today. But I have, in 30 years in the business, never seen anything like this in terms of the intensity, the great new ideas that are coming forward, the things that we're doing to make the existing machines state of the art. It's like no time before and the excitement is palpable.

I have never heard of nuclear energy called a purple energy before. I love that. I can see where it's coming from, 100%. And so I wanna drill down a little bit more into that. So how many facilities do you have right now? And then how many, do you have anything on the drawing board in terms of actually opening up new nuclear power plants?

Yeah, sure. So we have 25 existing nuclear plants right now. To put that in perspective, the US has, roughly speaking, about 94. We're bringing on a new unit called the Crane Clean Energy Center. That should be started in '27. We are-

Where's that at? I'm sorry.

So the Crane Clean Energy Center is in Pennsylvania. It was the unit that was not involved in the incident at Three Mile Island.

Are you partnering with Microsoft on that?

We are. We are.

Right. That's the Microsoft power plant that people know about.

That's exactly right.

Right, okay.

And we're working with Meta in Southern Illinois at a site where we may develop the next round of nuclear. We're also heavily involved with New York State where Governor Hochul just increased the target for new nuclear to be about four gigawatts. So think about four large plants that are now being planned for New York. And we're seeing that all over the place. We're seeing in Texas, we're seeing interest in Maryland. And what's what's fascinating to me is these places where, you know, to your point a moment ago, just 18 to 24 months ago, we didn't see an interest in building new nuclear. Now 180 degrees different, real intense procedural process to figure out where we cite 'em, what technologies to build, and all of this is enabled to a certain extent by the hyperscalers who are obviously willing to invest and are quite interested in the technology.

I want to talk about those hyperscalers, but first, so when it comes to nuclear power, France was right all along.
