Constellation CEO on What Hyperscalers Mean For the Energy System

So let's talk about the hyperscalers. There's all kinds of conversation about this insatiable demand from AI, and the hyperscalers to create that AI. Controversy there in terms of, well, they're making residential rates go up. What is your take on that situation? This is a big deal for you in terms of, you know, the public-facing part of your job, right?

Yeah, for sure. Look, I think this is a new type of load. Load is, you know, what we call demand in our business, but a new level of demand that we haven't seen in a long period of time. Keep in mind that the last 20 years of our business have been, if you had to say what's the hallmark of that period from a growth standpoint, it was declining growth. It was whatever was growing in the economy was being more than offset by lighting efficiency and other things we're doing. Well, those energy efficiency options are dwindling, right? We got the low hanging fruit. And then on top of that, we see some of the resumption of demand, both from vehicle electrification as well as the hyperscalers. So we saw a system that was pretty loose, had a lot of extra capacity, and that's tightened up. And of course, energy prices are simple reflection of supply and demand fundamentals. So those have ticked up as well.

So how much more demand are these hyperscalers sucking outta the system? I mean, how do we quantify that? How do we think about it?

I think it's in the neighborhood of a few percent per year, but that adds up over a period of time. So, you know, you think about this business as probably growing sub 1% prior to the data economy demand. Now we're probably thinking about electric demand growing more like 3%, 4% per year.

Isn't there an issue about counting how many data centers there are that you were talking about at one point, that people are kind of double counting and maybe some political people with an agenda, trying to make the situation worse, or at least from your perspective?

Well, sure, like we are definitely seeing that. And what I think you're alluding to is the fact that we know, because we serve multi-state regions, we know that our same client will come in and, for example, propose a project in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, maybe other places. And so those sites will compete with each other, but when the initial service request goes into those utilities in Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, all looks like a new project. So we were having, in the early days here, double, triple counting of the same project, which created a lot of the noise. Now keep in mind, we are legitimately seeing load growth and it is substantial. On the other hand, I think it was quite overstated in the early days, and unfortunately, we've created a bit of hysteria that the lights are gonna go out. There's no indication of that.

Well, let me cut to the chase though. I mean, are residential rates in the United States being driven up by hyperscalers? What do you think?

I think to a certain extent, any demand growth in a supply and demand market, whether we're talking about corn, pork bellies, or electricity, has the same effect. It increases prices, calls on more supply to be added to the market, and that's what is driving new power plants being built.

Right, and that will increase supply, and then who knows what that cycle will bring?

Then it balances out, and we've seen this commodity cycle in a lot of areas.
