Free Ex on the Weekend: Where Did the Moral Clarity of "Jack Ryan" Go?

Tevi Troy, I enjoyed your piece, your free expression piece, about Tom Clancy. I know you're a big Tom Clancy fan and admirer of the books. I like Tom Clancy as well, but you didn't care for this new movie. Tell us about that.

I'd say I was a Tom Clancy fan 'cause in the '80s and '90s, he was writing terrific spy thrillers with a really good sense of what American technology was and also a very strong moral sense. He was a fan and supporter of America. Sometimes, he would recognize that not everyone in America was great, but overall America was on the side of right against the KGB and against Islamist terrorists, and later on against the Chinese Security State. And so, we had a strong moral sense that appealed to Ronald Reagan and appealed to hundreds of millions of buyers. Now, however, this new series and his latest movie, "Ghost War," really frames America usually is the bad guy. And America's CIA and its spy agencies are usually doing the wrong thing, and it's up to Jack Ryan to stop it, or fix it, or go after the bad forces within America, as opposed to fighting the bad forces that America is threatened by.

I watched a couple of the "Jack Ryan" Tom Clancy shows on Amazon over the years. This movie you're talking about is the latest, but it's been a television series with episodes and this sort of thing. And I think it was in Season 2, where much of it was set in Venezuela. And they didn't even depict Venezuela as a failed socialist country. They tried to make it into something else. They couldn't even do that.

No, it was worse, they made it into some right-wing tinpot dictator, as opposed to the actual dictator of Venezuela who was a socialist and was ruining the country with socialist policies.

One thing that impressed me about Tom Clancy was his loyal readership, and I have a story about this when I was working for a magazine once. There was a moment when I was writing on antisatellite technology, and I had learned from a source that Tom Clancy had imagined some of this in one of his novels, but he couldn't remember where the reference was. And I thought, "Well, that's really neat. I'd love to work that into the story somehow, but I had no idea where to go." And Tom Clancy writes these mammoth books, you know, some of it is hundreds and hundreds of pages. How am I gonna find this? I blagged, remember blagging, when you sort of beg your audience for information. And I said, "Somewhere in Tom Clancy, there's an example of anti-satellite technology. Would somebody please tell me about this?" And the responses were just incredible. I mean, I got dozens and dozens of responses, and some of them were as simple as, "It's in 'The Cardinal of the Kremlin,' right?" Just the book title, it's there. Others said, "It's in 'The Cardinal of the Kremlin' on page, you know, 540 or whatever." To the guy who actually transcribed the chapter for me. Right.

Wow.

He actually physically typed it out, which tells you something about, you know, just this amazing readership and the loyalty. That was a lesson for me that this guy really had a lot of fans and devoted readers.

Yeah, and I think the loyalty came from a couple of things. I talk in the piece about how the Secretary of the Navy, John Lehman, wondered, when he met Tom Clancy, where he was getting his information from. Reagan had a similar concern. And Clancy himself said that he wasn't a spy, he didn't have secret sources, he just read widely. He would read Janes Defence Weekly to see what was going on. And it's amazing what you can do, what you can learn, when you actually read stuff.

Are there other films based on Tom Clancy books that you have enjoyed and would recommend?

Yeah, I also like "Patriot Games," which was about the Irish Republican army in an attempt to do a terrorist attack here in the US. But the later it got, or the more close to the president, it got the more woke or more PC it got. So, in "The Sum of All Fears," which is about an Islamic terror attack on the Super Bowl, where they use a nuclear weapon to blow up the Super Bowl, a terrible, terrible thing. They changed it in the movie so that it wouldn't be an Islamic terror attack. And this is around 9/11 where you're thinking, "Hey, this is actually something that Islamist terrorists might try to do to us."

But a lot of movies have this problem, don't they? The politics of them are screwy, they're woke, they're left wing. This is an ordinary problem. It's even a predictable problem.

Oh, yeah, it's absolutely right, John. This is an endemic problem in Hollywood. It's constantly happening. The Americans are always the bad guys. The actual enemies we face are never mentioned or never addressed. I think the reason that I wanted to address this particular thing about Tom Clancy is because Tom Clancy had a specific moral universe, and now the rot has taken place and is infecting that very specifically laid out moral universe. So, I think that's a problem. But I do think we need to address this larger issue of America always being the bad guy. America's not the bad guy. America is on the side of right. America is the defender of Western civilization most of the time anyway. I think we need to have movies that express that. In the '70s and '80s, you and I would watch movies where the KGB was the bad guy, and it kind of laid out what the stark choice we faced between the Soviet oppressive system and the free American system. And I think if we're not gonna have schools that teach that America's in the right, or have Hollywood movies that show that America's in the right, or have novels that show it, the next generation is not gonna be growing up viewing America in the right way. And it's gonna make it hard for us to have people defend this country, hard to have us... For us to have people want to move to this country and contribute to this great country. And also hard for us to convince other countries around the world that we're on the right side of things. So, I think this moral rot has real consequences.
