Free Expression on the Weekend: Can Patriotism Survive Cynicism?

If we cease to love our country because our country is not perfect, where on earth can you possibly go? What country is perfect?

Hi, Meghan. I enjoyed your free expression column this week on patriotism. The headline, which I know you didn't write, ask a question which is, "Can patriotism survive cynicism?" How do you answer that question? "Can patriotism survive cynicism?"

In some ways, patriotism and cynicism are like oil and water. You can shake them up and you can make it look like there's a blend for a little while, but the minute you let it sit, they'll separate. What is it to be patriotic? It is to love your country, to be proud of your country. And loving your country means loving like loving a family member. It's like you love the whole thing. You, you know, you might not like every attribute of that family member or you're country, but you love it. You're on its side. You're in favor of it. So, that's a very ardent, very sincere kind of loving, tender, positive thing. To be cool or cynical is almost exactly the opposite. It is to stand apart from something So, no, I don't think the two go together well at all. And it's quite difficult. I mean, here we are on the eve of our 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. If ever there were a time to make the American heartbeat, you know, loyally, it is now. But unfortunately, we are in a culture that is suffused with a sort of bitterness, and cynicism, and partisanship and these qualities just, are they really mitigate against the tenderness of heart that is required, I think, for a truly patriotic feeling.

What is the evidence that we actually have a patriotism problem today?

There are lots of recent studies. There was a Gallup poll that I cited in my article. 58% of people, this is from last year, 2025, 58% of Americans described themselves either as extremely patriotic or very patriotic. That's not a really ringing endorsement of love of country. In 1976 when we had our 200th anniversary, the pessimists were, you know, they existed. You are always gonna have pessimists, but they weren't in great numbers. And now, the numbers have risen dramatically.

Why do you think people are so pessimistic today? One person might say, "Well, there's a lot to be pessimistic about."

I know that for my parents' generation, the Adam bomb was something that caused great pessimism. Industrialization caused pessimism for people before that. If you want to compile reasons to find fault with things, you can always find something. And I think that we are in a fault finding age. Certainly the vernacular of social media is very fault finding. Gotcha. Negative. Ha! You're pawned. You're owned. Whatever. We're in a fault finding age. There's plenty to find fault with. And all of this probably, I would guess, erodes natural feelings of patriotism and love of country.

What can parents do to give their own kids a patriotic education? Is there a book or two or three books you might recommend?

It's always worth going back to the works of Robert Lawson, who is a very patriotic American who wrote and illustrated and was highly decorated in the children's book space in the 20th century. He has a book about Benjamin Franklin's mouse called "Ben and Me," and Paul Revere's Horse, which is "Mr. Revere and I." He also wrote a book, I think it's called, "They Were Strong and Good." It was about pioneers in his own family who settled the country and he sort of ennobles their efforts. There is also this year there's a new book, which I think is absolutely fantastic. I have a copy of it here I'd like to show you. It's called, "The American Book of Fables." It's written by Matt Mehan and illustrated by John Folley. And it's a wonderful book. It sort of operates at three levels. It equates children with the majesty of this extraordinary various country that we have. There are sweet little kind of quirky little rhymes and things for little kids. There are little maxims and stories for middle grade kids. And then there are, for older readers, there are longer disquisitions on from things taken from American history, from the stories of Aesop, but adapted for the American environment, and actually fables set in the United States. These authors and illustrators present history, not hiding the warts, but they're presenting it with straightforward, sincere love of country. There's a sort of lovely, straightforward ardor about "The American Book of Fables," and the works of Robert Lawson that I think are really very useful for our families who are trying to inculcate love of country in their children.

More patriotic education might be part of the solution, recognizing the greatness of our country and expressing some gratitude for the fact that we live here and not somewhere else.

I find now when I talk to little children in particular, I feel totally unabashed about just saying to them, "We are really fortunate to be Americans. This is a wonderful country. This is an incredible country. It's a huge, and gorgeous, and disparate country, full of all kinds of people, all kinds of ideas all held together. It with an extraordinary structure given to us by our founders, who had the good sense to really work these ideas out 250 years ago." There's a kind of indulgence abroad now where people today think that they're kind of the first to ever examine the semi history of the United States or of really wrestle with the lessons of history or whatnot. I mean, I'm sorry, but that is so arrogant. People have been doing this forever and ever and ever. Really at the founding of the country, the founders themselves were wrestling with very difficult ideas. They knew that there were certain contradictions built into the founding of a land of liberty in which there was human bondage. I mean, it's been something that Americans have known about, and struggled about, and talked about, and worked out, and fought an enormous war over, you know, for our entire history. So the idea that it's just like in the last five years or 10 years, somehow Americans have woken up to their dark history, it's just preposterous. It's kind of embarrassing and it speaks to the lack of patriotic education. If we cease to love our country because our country is not perfect, where on earth can you possibly go? What country is perfect? What human endeavor is perfect? You know what? It doesn't exist.
