Free Expression on the Weekend: Taylor Swift's Wedding Era

People will search for the Easter eggs that don't exist. Right, like trying to connect the dots-

Right, right, that's the thing!

That should not be...

All three of us had very strong opinions about Taylor Swift's recent wedding and so we decided to talk about it. I found the whole thing to be kind of ridiculous. I think it says something very interesting about where celebrity culture has gone. Instead of getting married on a private island like most really rich, really famous people have the good sense to do, she got married in Madison Square Garden. Just about every celebrity I've ever heard of was there. And I think in the age of social media, you need to act like an influencer. You have to engagement bait, which is something that Taylor Swift has historically been very good at with her Easter eggs, with sort of giving details drip by drop. And so I think what's happening now is that they're very strategically allowing certain bits of information to leak, and then sooner or later, we're going to get a big dump with, you know, the dress, and her 20-minute vows and so on.

Okay. I totally hear that. I do agree that having a wedding in Madison Square Garden is a little bit ridiculous. But my take about the location is actually, I think it's quite central. She made this big show. Yeah, I think it's convenient for people to get to. And I know that it was on America's 250 and I know that it was during the World Cup. She really said, you know, on her tour for her most recent album, "The Life of a Showgirl," she was, you know, talking about the wedding and talking about getting married, and said that she wanted to invite every single person she ever met. That's sweet. You don't think there's something sweet about that? And then having it in somewhere central like Madison Square Garden, secure, and like no one can take paparazzi photos inside, I think that's very thoughtful for the 1,000 celebrity guests that she had there.

I am surprised she didn't choose the Chiefs' stadium in Kansas City, 'cause that is where they met.

Yes.

I feel like that would have been a bit more fitting.

I do like that, yeah.

But she identifies as a New Yorker and I get why she chose MSG for that reason. It's the most spectacle of all places and she is a performer, she likes to put on a show.

I don't think it's so nefarious or like, I don't know, manipulative of fans to like, not release any information. I do think we're gonna get some sort of big documentary or something. Do you guys think we're getting a documentary?

Yeah.

I think she's definitely gonna find a way to find content from this incredibly beautiful and outlandish wedding. By the way, it's exactly in service of her fans. Like, that is what they want. And her wedding itself was full of all these Easter eggs, like lyrics from her songs, and I think people love that. I mean, you wrote about this in your piece. I think it's so wonderful that it does unite people, across generations, across parts of the world. It's a monoculture, and we have lost monoculture in modern society.

Right. Like, in my piece, I spoke about how it's like a secular liturgy. The sacred texts are her lyrics, and the prophecies are the Easter eggs that she leaves for us, and the Communion are the concerts. Like, you know, there's something to that. If no one's going to church, let them go to a Taylor Swift concert.

Yes, I think your reaction proves my theory right that this is about fan engagement. I think I take a slightly more cynical view probably because of the three of us, I am the only one who is not a Swiftie. It captures so succinctly the social media age and what it means to be a celebrity in the age of iPhones, where you are incentivized to give this sort of intimate information in sort of like bite-sized packages.

Even though she hasn't delivered any information yet.

No, but she's-

With all the leaks.

But of course, you know the leaks are gonna happen. I think that's part of the strategy.

Taking a step back from our critiques or applause for the wedding celebration itself, I do think that the symbolism of her getting married, settling down at age 36, yeah, I mean, you can get into a conversation about declining birth rates and whether this has the power to revive them. I'm not sure about that, but I do think there is a powerful symbolic potency here.

There are a lot of people who were very happy about the wedding, but then a lot of people who are sort of moving to cancel her. The thing that people are unhappy about right now is that one of the guests was this guy, Steven Demetriou, who is the CEO of a government contractor that is a government contractor for an ICE detention center in El Paso, Texas. Steven Demetriou is the adoptive father of Travis Kelce's, one of Travis Kelce's friends, and so his entire family came. And so this person who's the CEO of a company that was a contractor for an ICE detention center was at the wedding, and now people are saying that Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are supporters of ICE.

I will note that people are spending way too much time speaking about that and not the fact that she donated $26 million to local charities, which I think-

That's a good point, yeah.

Is an amazing contribution to New York City.

This is a good reason to have a small wedding. You know, you don't have to worry about, like-

$26 million to the food bank?

What the dads of your friends from college are up to. You just like-
