Free Expression on the Weekend: What Do Gen Z Women Want?

Hi, I'm Emma Camp. I'm joined today by Mary Julia Koch. Recently, we both wrote pieces about warring narratives surrounding young women. Are they cat lady girl bosses, or are they anti-feminist trad wives? The answer might be the secret third option, which is neither.

I wrote a piece in response to the new national figures showing that the US fertility rate dropped to a historic low. There are now more women in their thirties having kids than women in their twenties. The response to this that I witnessed on the right was that the blame should lie with sort of the girl boss feminist ideology that's dominated pop culture. The truth is a lot more complicated actually. When you speak to young women and when you pull them, they say that it's not that they don't want to have families, most of them do. One of the top reasons that women explain that they haven't settled down yet is that they haven't found the right partner. And I think that this goes hand in hand with this sort of dating recession that we've witnessed among young people where, you know, both sides, both men and women, want to find a partner, but with the prevalence of dating apps, with sort of this risk aversion to approaching people in public, it's just become harder to find a mate.

Yeah, I might be a little harder on our co-generationals than you are. I think that people say they want partners, but I'm not sure that they're willing to engage in the social risks required to actually find someone. Doing the kind of things that lead you to find a partner, saying yes to your friend's parties because you might meet someone there, going out to bars or events or joining social clubs, I think people aren't doing that because that involves some risk of embarrassment. And we have these amazing little pleasure machines in our pockets that make loneliness feel less lonely than it might have in the past.

I also think the standards have become impossibly high. Like we've seen that women are outpacing men in education and in income growth, and marriage now is less about survival. It's more about, you know, finding true love, which is a great thing. But I think as a result of that, women are setting really, really high standards sometimes that sort of can't be met by a shrinking pool of sort of young eligible men.

I, for one, am very glad that we live in a world in which women, by and large, do not depend upon men for economic survival. Speaking of the women who do want that, there's been a lot of hubbub about trad wives, these traditional wives, women who want to not just be stay-at-home moms, but to be in these sort of arrangements where they submit to their husbands, and there's sort of this like traditionalist, very conservative anti-feminist bent to it all, and basically whether or not this is a growing segment of the female population. And I wrote about a pretty sketchy-looking survey that claimed to show that nearly half of all Gen Z women want to be trad wives. How this survey worked, it was very weird. It gave Gen Z women four possible lives that they could choose from. The first one was being basically a trophy wife. The second one was the girl boss archetype, being very successful, but single. The third is having this creative career where you travel a lot and you have a partner, but you're child-free. And the fourth was being happily married with children and a normal job. And it was this option, so being married with kids and employed, that was framed as being the trad wife life, when the trophy wife option was right there. That's the actual trad wife option, I suppose. And that was actually the least popular option. Like the vast majority of women who responded, I think it was like 86%, wanted to have a job in some capacity. But what was so frustrating about this is this service in a blog post looking at the results said, "Ah, you know, half of Gen Z women, they want to be trad wives because they don't want to be hyper successful in their careers at the expense of everything else." If wanting to have it all, which is like the classic second wave feminist dream, wanting to have a family and a job as being a trad wife, then like, who isn't a trad wife at this point?

The online personalities we would most be likely to categorize as trad wives, themselves don't identify as a trad wife.

Yes. Yes. Yes, this is something I get on my high horse about all the time. I love Ballerina Farm. For the uninitiated, this is a LDS lifestyle influencer. She's like Martha Stewart, like she has a bunch of kids, but most of her videos...

Eight kids, right?

Eight kids, maybe not.

I think she just had her ninth maybe.

Oh, wow.

In Utah. But most of her videos are just like really beautiful, like her making bread or like making some kind of kombucha like thing. She doesn't proselytize for traditional gender roles. She's actively pushed back.

Right.

When people have tried to label her a trad wife, she isn't, like she just is a lifestyle influencer. It feels like among a certain segment of the cultural commentators, any positive depiction of domestic life has been coded as suspiciously right wing, and therefore morally suspect. Like if you just frame, you know, if under patriarchy, you frame being married and having kids as a good thing, that suggests that you are actually an anti-feminist reactionary. And I think this is a terrible idea because most women want a happy domestic life. Most women want to get married and have kids. And if you say, oh, you want to get married and have kids? Have you considered that you're a far right reactionary? I think you're gonna end up losing a lot of people doing that.

I also think what gets lost in this conversation is the fact that it's never been easier to do both. And I've also interviewed some young moms who told me that they really believe in the idea of the seasons, where certain seasons of your life can be devoted toward family and then another one could be devoted toward career. It doesn't all need to happen at the exact same time. And I think that's a really helpful framework because it shows that it's not this zero-sum game of you either have to be, you know, in an office five days a week, grinding as hard as you can, or you have to be at home without any sort of career ambitions. Like, you can pursue both.

I think this is something that we can get behind in a bipartisan way, like women being able to live the lives that they wish to live. And again, to fulfill that early feminist dream of being able to exist in the public sphere, but then also have a satisfying family life.
