 K-Pop Is Betting on AI and Robots. Will Fans Buy It?

At this park in Seoul, the latest K-pop performers aren't actually idols. They're robots.

South Korea turned K-pop into a global phenomenon worth billions of dollars. Now, its entertainment industry is betting on AI and robotics for its next act, reshaping how content is made and how fans experience it.

Right now, AI is not just a headline or a hashtag or a buzzword. Anybody and everybody who is not just in the music, but entertainment and media space as well is not just thinking about AI, but using AI.

The negative comments were like, "How could you use AI?" Like, "This is AI slop." 'Cause if I had all the money and resources, I would not use AI.

Galaxy Corporation works with some of K-pop's biggest names, including G-Dragon and Taemin, but its latest attraction isn't human.

But why use robot performers in the first place?

Galaxy's aim is to create robotic twins of its stars, but first it has to teach them how to dance.

For all the ambition, the robots still have a long way to go.

Beyond robot performances, Galaxy is also developing virtual bands and using AI to create music as well as music videos. And that's where the industry's real battleground lies. ♪ Swimming through the coast ♪ ♪ She'll never know the truth ♪

Annie is a music artist based in Seoul, and she's used AI for her band's album art and videos.

Making music videos and album covers is always, you know, such a hassle to me. Making a cute animation out of our music video like in the past, like 30 seconds were like thousands of dollars. So it was never attainable. But once I saw that could be a potential for us, I was like kind of very excited about the technology, to be honest. We made this single "Soft Delusion," and that music video was made out of AI. I think the negative comments were like, "How could you use AI? Like this is AI slop." I understand people who are saying that if they have all the money and resources, like these huge K-pop labels, why are they using AI? They can always hire people. I see both sides. 'Cause if I had all the money and resources, I would not use AI.

AI isn't just changing the performers or the visuals, it's changing the music itself.

When Suno came out and everybody was trying, if you type something and the music just spits out, I think I never considered that for myself because it's sucking the joy out of it, like the music-making process. I think people are scared and intrigued at the same time, especially my peers. AI can generate a melody. You know, the ones who get paid to do the demo vocals, they are immediately sacked. I'm also like a part-time voiceover actor as well. So like once AI started, like I lost all my jobs.

When we look at not just the innovation, but more importantly, disruption, technology has had on the history of K-pop, it's something inevitable and unavoidable. Whether it was piracy, whether it was streaming, whether it was the internet opening the markets both to and from globally, technology had a very key role.

But AI is presenting the industry with a new set of challenges.

The genie's out of the bottle. Rather than be reactive to a disruptive technology, the government and more importantly the industry, have really sort of come into alignment that this again is another chapter in the music industry where technology could have either a wildly positive or a wildly negative impact.

In August, Korea's Music Copyright Association began allowing AI-assisted music to be registered as long as humans played a leading role, but it backtracked weeks later following government concerns. But how do we know if a song has used AI?

At the moment, the current rules and regulations about AI disclosure unfortunately relies heavily or almost entirely on honesty, human honesty. And we know because we live in a world where that's not always gonna be true. Now, fortunately, AI can also be used to detect the use of AI in the creation of music. We're starting to see startups that are not only involved with the AI creation of music, but the AI deconstruction of music, determining how much AI was used, what music was used, and more importantly, that if certain music was used through AI in new works, that through reverse engineering of the secret sauce, the rights holders can be remunerated for the use of their music in new derivative interpretive works.

Definitely the problem with AI all started from copyright because, you know, there's this website that if you type the band name, then, you know, it shows that how many songs of ours have been used in AI. And I typed our name and it was like hundred songs came out. So, you know, I think that's the part that people dislike the most because, you know, it's not giving credit to the artists. AI doesn't learn from nothing. They have to be fed with information and art and whatnot. So it should be notified to the artist first and get their consent and they get compensated. And then if they do machine learning and have that technology, that's fine. But the problem is that artists never get credit for it.

Even as regulators play catch up, more money is pouring into technology and entertainment. Turning that investment into profit will be the next challenge. HYBE, the company behind BTS spent nearly $35 million buying AI voice startup Supertone, only to shutter it three years later. One reason why might be the fans.

The current use of AI in K-pop is a disaster. You can be the worst singer in the world and then AI is going to make it perfect and then people are gonna love you because they think you have a perfect voice. It's absolutely horrible. If I do see AI being used for any idols, any performances whatsoever, I'm just gonna feel disappointed. I will not support it.

These fans may be skeptical, but others have seen this resistance before.

This isn't the first time whether it was the vinyl LP moving to compact discs or, you know, even auto-tune. AI is part of that natural progression that we've seen so far. Take the music industry and music creativity further. Granted, AI is much bigger, much better, and perhaps for some even badder. And I think again creatives have already started emerging showing that technology can be a tool rather than a replacement for human creativity.
