Kevin Hassett Says He Does Not 'Anticipate Mass Job Losses' From AI

You have such a crucial job in the economy at such a fascinating time, especially when it comes to artifical intelligence.

Kevin: Mm.

And you have said recently, that you do not think that it will replace a significant number of American jobs, and that stands in contrast to some of the leading people creating this technology. Dario at Anthropic, for example, said AI could eliminate 50% of entry level white collar jobs in the next five years.

Kevin: Mhm.

Poppy: Tell me why you don't think it will?

Yeah, in fact, Dario was in my office, I think last week or the week before.

Poppy: Okay.

When you're in the White House, you kind of sometimes forget which.

Poppy: As I said, fascinating job.

But the fact is that the way to think about what AI is doing right now, is it's teaching itself to be a really good coach for a person who's a worker who wants to be really good at their job. And so imagine if you've been at a job for three years and you've got somebody who's been doing a job for eight years, and then you gotta like get this part to fit into that thing, it's not quite working. Then you get the, senior person comes over and helps you do your job. And what AI is, is basically a really good coach for people across a wide variety of professions. And on my, back in my Stanford days, last January, I had to give up my Stanford position to come here. My friend, Eric Brindelson, had looked across a number of industries and found that the sort of positive benefits of having a really good coach were very visible in productivity. And so I think the question is, that if people get really good at doing this, and so we need fewer people to do this, then what happens over time to the economy?

Well, that's the question. What if it's not just a?

It's an age old question.

Poppy: What if it becomes the?

Would we be better off in ?

Player, right?

Excuse me?

What if it becomes the player, the job? I mean, Dario went on to say, maybe he talked to you about this. Please tell us if he did, that he thinks, quote, the government needs to step in, in some form if we have these mass job losses.

I don't anticipate mass job losses.

Poppy: You don't?

No, I don't. I think what's going to happen is that because remember, remember this, that for AI to come in and all of a sudden, make it, people more productive, then that means that we, as a society, are wealthier. Our GDP growth is higher. We have a lot more stuff. And then the wealthier people are gonna buy other things. And then we've got new professions being created over here. And so, of course, technological change is, can be uncertain and unsettling, but we're not leadites. And the history of it is that electricity turned out to be a good thing. The internal combustion engine turned out to be a good thing. The computer turned out to be a good thing. And I think AI will as well.
