Kevin Rudd: Altman Must ‘Lift His Game’ after OpenAI Data Breach

So I mentioned to our dear audience about some news overnight concerning Australia and AI. Prime Minister Albanese said yesterday that OpenAI had invaded government data. And I'm wondering what you know about that and what the latest is there.

Well, OpenAI apparently had their own internal awareness of this some time ago, but there was a huge delay in their formal notification of the Australian government. I mean, OpenAI is saying this morning that they sent some obscure email to some obscure inbox somewhere. The bottom line is if you've got an AI agent, which you know as the originating company has breached cyber defenses of the social or economic infrastructure of one of your partner countries in a large market, then you should be on the telephone immediately so that the appropriate agencies, in our case, the Australian Signals Directorate, can automatically act on cyber defenses for our own cyber command. I mean, we're a reasonably sophisticated country. We know how these things work. We do it on a regular basis. But we do depend on the companies telling us. This is something where I've got to say Sam needs to lift his game.

Sam Altman needs to lift his game?

On this, yeah. I'm just being very blunt about it. There's a, sometimes a bit of a cavalier culture out there in the Valley about these things. We're a sovereign state. We take our cyber defenses seriously. We're a modern democracy. We have an excellent collaborative relationship with the major AI companies and the platform providers, but it does depend on them notifying us when a problem arises, 'cause we can then act relatively quickly. But that's what broke down here. So lift your game, Sam.

And just a couple quick follow-ups. Was there significant damage? Was there impact to this data, and how secret was it? I mean, maybe you can't get into some of that, but...

I'm sure the PM will outline later to the Australian people what, if anything, was compromised. I'm not in that loop. I've now left government service about three months ago. But we take these things step by step. Look, mistakes happen. We understand that. Nothing in the world is perfect, but given how fast this game is moving in terms of frontier models, notwithstanding what Dario had to say the other day, this now needs to be a much smoother operation than is currently the case in terms of the intersection between a frontier model, has it been tested against cyber defenses before its release? If not, and even if so, and if a breach occurs, to immediately get on the phone to say, "Houston, we have a problem." Or, "Sydney, we have a problem."
