Narrator: As the son of comedy behemoth Carl Reiner, he became a household name in the '70s for his role as the outspoken, long-haired, liberal son-in-law on "All in the Family," playing Michael Stivic, or as his bigoted father-in-law called him, Meathead.

She told me it was your son, Mike.

Narrator: From acting, he turned to directing. His credits include a string of movies in the '80s and '90s that became fixtures in the pop culture canon across a range of genres.

It's a bit of a departure from the kind of thing you normally play.

What time is it?

Nine to eight. ♪ Ah, lights out, uh huh ♪

My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Narrator: And then came one of the most iconic, "When Harry Met Sally."

Narrator: Reiner met his future wife, Michele Singer, a photographer, during the making of the film, and fans can thank the relationship for the happy ending.

Okay, "When Harry Met Sally," was that always the original ending?

No, no. The original ending we had was that they didn't get together because I didn't know how that was ever gonna happen. And then I meet the woman who I've now been married to for 36 years, Michele. And we fall in love during the making of the movie.

Really?

Yes. And so I changed the ending.

Narrator: He also spent much of his time on political causes. He was an influential democratic fundraiser, championing causes like funding for early childhood services and the right to same-sex marriage. Reiner's work took a somber turn in 2015 with "Being Charlie" about an 18-year-old addict who breaks out of a youth treatment program. Reiner's son, Nick, co-wrote the script based loosely on his own battles with heroin addiction.

Narrator: Reiner slowed down his filmmaking work in recent years, but directed a sequel to "Spinal Tap," which was released in September.
