I'm Alan Murray, President of the Wall Street Journal Leadership Institute, and I'm here at Journal House in Cannes with Dan Shapiro, who is the CEO of LinkedIn. Dan, thanks for coming down from- You got a nice rooftop here. You came down from the rooftop to be with us.

Right at the Carlton in Cannes. It's hot today though.

And what is Cannes to you? What are you here for?

Well, it's a festival for creativity and a lot of LinkedIn is about connecting with brands and creators on the platform. So we love being here, but Cannes is often a place for consumer brands. We're really here for the B2B brands.

Yeah. Well, we are too. So you've been at LinkedIn for what, 18 years?

18 years.

Just became CEO in April. So tell us what your theory of the case is. What's LinkedIn's next chapter look like? Are you still working on that?

Well, I think one of the beautiful things about LinkedIn, as long as I've been there, and it's one of the reasons I feel so connected to the work, is we've always been this platform for economic opportunity. And I think we're living through a time right now where there's a lot of career uncertainty for people. Angst, jobs are changing. People are wondering whether the skills that they've built over a career are still relevant today. How do they future proof themselves? So I think we have a huge role to play, tell people, understand what's going on around them, find career opportunity, connect with the people that are gonna help them stay ahead.

And how will that change in the next decade?

Well, I think there's a few parts of it. I think the first thing is the kinds of opportunities that exist for people are gonna change. A good example is the number of people on LinkedIn putting Founder on their profile is up 60% in the last two years alone.

Wow.

And so you're seeing more people realize that AI and skills that they have are allowing them to create opportunities for themselves as solopreneurs in a way that maybe hasn't existed in the past.

Wow. And you're fine with that. You can service those people as well as people looking for jobs.

I mean, entrepreneurs and solopreneurs do fantastically on LinkedIn as a platform, both to build their own credibility, to build customers, but also to learn what they need to do to stay ahead of their markets.

Yeah. How is AI gonna change the business? That's what everyone on the street here in Cannes is talking about.

Well, I think AI is changing everything, but one of the ways that it's changing things the most is that knowing that you had a specific role in your past doesn't mean that you have the skills that employers are looking for for the future. So one of the things that we announced this week is called Connected Apps so that every member can actually connect their LinkedIn profile to the tools they use to do their jobs so they can verify that they're actually capable experts in those new technologies. So you might be a marketing manager, but now you can say you're a marketing manager that's deep in HubSpot or Profound or other technologies that employers looking hire for.

And how does that work? So let's say you're deep into HubSpot. How is that verified on the LinkedIn platform?

Yeah. Perfect. Well, you can on HubSpot connect your HubSpot account to your LinkedIn profile. And then HubSpot verifies that you're a user, they can declare that you're a top user and over time we're gonna allow HubSpot to decorate your profile with specific things that they know you've done in their tool to allow you to show off what you really know.

So you get these-

It's a verified credential.

Yeah. Interesting.

So we're launching with over 30 different brands right now, and this is gonna be a big part of making sure that members on LinkedIn can really verify what they're capable of.

So as you pointed out, there's a lot of angst out there about AI, what it means for jobs, what the job opportunities are gonna be. Is that drawing more people to LinkedIn?

Well, I think LinkedIn has always been a place for economic opportunity. In times like now, more people come to the platform to understand what they need to learn, how they can get ahead. And it's particularly becoming popular amongst Gen Z. So Gen Z is our fastest growing demographic and a big part of it is they're trying to chart their careers at a time where the historical playbook isn't necessarily the right one. So they're trying to find creators that can help them learn what they need to do. They're trying to understand companies that might create opportunities for them. But Gen Z is really embracing LinkedIn and we think that's really positive.

And they're embracing it both to connect with companies, connect with brands, connect with customers, but also to get the learning and training they need to be good at their jobs.

First thing they're doing is they're using LinkedIn to stay on top of everything that's changing in the world of work, which companies are hiring, which trends are popping, which skills they need to learn to be relevant for the future. They're also using it to search for jobs and they're using it to build the skills that they need.

So who do you see as your principle competition?

Well, we really focus on, you know, how to help people get economic opportunity. So in some cases it's a platform for content. In some cases it's a platform for finding jobs and other, it's about representing your professional brand as a business. So we represent all different aspects of the digital professional world, but LinkedIn's really unique.

So you don't see competition.

I think from a platform perspective we're quite unique, but obviously there's other places to find jobs or find content on the platform, on the web.

So Dan, every CEO I talk to these days tells me they're going through a transformation. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't, but they all say it. Are you taking LinkedIn through a major transformation or do you feel like LinkedIn has the formula?

I think what we stand for in the world is gonna be incredibly consistent. We're a platform for opportunity. I think every company is asking themselves, how do we need to work differently in order to build wonderful products that add value to people? How do we connect with people on a global basis? The playbook is gonna change, but the mission and vision of the company is gonna remain incredibly consistent.
