Marc Lasry Predicts ‘Massive Influx of Capital’ Into the WBNA

Marc, you've said that women's sports is massively undervalued. What is on the horizon for you guys when it comes to women's sports?

Well, we've invested in the North Carolina Courage, so women's soccer team. We've invested in a WNBA team. I think the reason it's undervalued is just people don't fully appreciate this. It's a cultural shift. So what I mean by that is when I was a kid, I would go to a game with my dad. He would never bring my sister. Not that he didn't like her, it's just he didn't think about it. The idea that you would just take your son, that's not the way it is anymore. So that cultural shift means that you've got 50% more people going, right? Maybe it's 40%, whatever that number is. So if you look at sort of tickets for a woman's game, the New York Liberty and the Brooklyn Nets. So New York Liberty won a championship, Brooklyn Nets suck. No, no, they do, it's not.

We get real talk with Marc Lasry. What did you guys think was gonna happen today?

It's a fact, they have one of the worst records. But I guarantee you that the tickets for the men's game is substantially higher for a courtside seat.

And the media rights, which you've talked about.

Are much higher.

Are insanely higher.

So what do you think it is?

Are you renegotiating? Are you getting in on this when WNBA, like where do you fit into this piece? I've heard you say it's like 3%, right?

It is 3%. So right now the difference between ratings for a woman's NBA game is a million and men's a million five. So it's a third less. Yet the media deal is not a third less. It ends up being 3%. So I'm not saying it should be a third less, maybe it should be 50%, 60?

Where are you in these conversations?

Oh, I'm gonna be a big proponent of the, you know, the media partners paying you more. But it'll be what it is, it comes up in four years. So in four years, I think you're gonna see this massive influx of capital going into WNBA.

When we all see that the rights are going up by a lot, I hope you all remember the conversation here.
