Jill Kramer, thank you so much for joining us.

Well, thank you, it's an absolute privilege to be here and so nice to spend time with you.

You spent a lot of time at Accenture...

I did.

Focused on B2B, and you've now made a big switch.

Yeah.

Joining the Priceless company, let's just say.

Yes.

So what is the big difference from a B2B perspective to now taking this role? What's the thing that most has surprised you about this?

Gosh, you know, early in my career, back when I was still on the agency side, I worked with a lot of brands that were B2B and B2C, but I would specialize in the B2B side or the corporate kind of branding that looked over both. And I've always been very interested in the discourse that always seems to happen, as if they're two very different types of advertising, but they really shouldn't be. And so, the ability to get back to my roots where I was on the advertising side of the table, the agency side of the table, and now go in and look at it through the lens of a CMCO where you could consider the entire, you know, the whole plethora of tools you have at your disposal. I really love it because number one, the brand is treasured at Mastercard. Every single person in that company is a steward of the brand. We have both B2B and B2B2C, so there's a great ability as a marketing and communication professional to really exercise all of your skills. I think from a career pathing standpoint, for the people on the team, you have the ability to diversify and try different roles. So I think both the brand prominence in terms of the business model is different, and from a pure craft skills standpoint, the ability to exercise different types of muscles in marketing and communications is more varied.

So you just corrected me on your title because you also have communications, which is so interesting. As a CMO for many years, I actually had comms report to me, but I didn't get that as another addition to my title. In a world where so many chief communications officers are actually becoming CMOs, why do you think it matters that those two things be interlinked?

I'm a huge proponent of communications people leading marketing and comms and marketing people leading marketing and comms. I always have been. I learned under very different types of CMCOs at Accenture, one who was a really communications professional, like amazing, learned that, and another who was more advertising brand-oriented. I love that, right now, as you know, in this world, especially with the way search and AEO GEO is changing, both things have to work together, and comms is brand and brand needs to have strong communication bones. And the way you tell your story completely through is really critical. So one of the big things we're looking at right now at Mastercard is, are we giving the communications side, even though it's CMCO, a lot of times, the comm side still feels separate. And one thing I think we did well at Accenture was begin to integrate that. We would put... I made a very important decision to take one of the top marketing leaders and make her the head of all internal comms because I wanted internal communications to be treated like a brand-building moment. At a professional services firm, it is. And we have incredibly talented individuals on the communication side at Mastercard. They have the ability to absolutely run the show. So rotating some of those folks into those, you know, combinatorial roles, either at a regional or a business unit level, is key to making sure that the entire system is working together. When you look across how companies tell their story and then how they advertise, how they run their social channels, sometimes you can see that it doesn't seem like they're really having the same conversation. And when they do work together, the progress you can make is significantly faster.

So you just broke some news in early June. Why don't you talk about this, because I think it's a very interesting AI story that we should talk about.

Yeah, so when you think about why does AI matter at Mastercard, it does on so many levels. I mean, when you think about the transaction volume and the fraud detection and the way AI has played a critical role in that for a while, but the thing that is a hot topic right now is around agentic commerce. And we came out with Agent Pay a little while ago and Agent Pay for Machines just last week. And that's creating the system to say, okay, commerce is going to change. Agents will play a role for you that's much more holistic in terms of...

I'm gonna interrupt you.

Yeah.

Because there are people who may have no idea what this Agent Pay for Machines is, and it is definitely innovative, and I think we should at least talk about...

Yes.

What that is before we sort of go further.

So if you think of Agent Pay base, and then Agent Pay for Machines, what that does is it sets a standard for how commerce will work when agents are involved. So understanding the, I'll call it verification, the validation of the agent acting on behalf of the human. And so, how do you build it into the network, into the system, into the security layers for that agent to be able to be verified, verified intent. And then you... That's between the agent, the human, and the commerce sites. Agent Pay for Machines stretches that even further, so that as you're doing smaller, more frequent transactions, machine to machine, agent to agent, how do you do the same thing? So what's being built is really the trust layer of agentic commerce.

Well, I was gonna ask you about that, right? Because you're now entering a world where you're creating things for agents to agents, right?

Correct.

And I actually spoke to another CMO where they actually held a conference for agents to actually attend and they didn't want humans to come. So, you know, we've entered the world of Matrix. I do think that the issue of trust is particularly important in this world, right? Because you're handing over to the system, in essence.

A hundred percent. I'm obsessed with this right now because if you look back at Mastercard's history, and really, its DNA, that trust component has been a core part of the brand forever, right? When you think about that, the only way people are gonna interact in new forms of commerce or payments is if you believe in that trust, and then you're gonna move confidently forward. But there's a new layer that also has to be integrated, and that's that human control and agency piece of it. Where am I in that system? Even if you construct the trust and, you know, I'm feeling good about that, where am I? Where's gonna be those checkpoints? And I think that's what's still to emerge with agentic commerce, is just how much will the agents do without the humans and how much will that expand over time? But for that, you need things like Agent Pay and you need things like Agent Pay for Machines so you can say, "Okay." And my ultimate goal is that you say, "Well, if Mastercard's involved with that, I'm gonna trust it."

Right, okay, so my final question for you is a brand question, right?

Yes.

Because Mastercard is synonymous with this idea of Priceless. And so, as a new CMO coming in, how do you think about evolving that?

So actually, we did a really fun exercise to really determine the eras of Priceless, the chapters, if you will, in its almost 30-year history. It'll be 30 years old in 2027. So really looking through every single time. I mean, the stewards of this brand over time are just best in class. And it always had a business problem or opportunity. Priceless was the right vehicle for that and you knew exactly how to measure that Priceless, the brand platform, was doing what it needed to do. And the way I went into it was with no assumptions. Let's do that exercise again. I wanna see every chapter. How did we know? What does it need to do now? Is it the best vehicle to do that, and how will I measure it? And I was a little worried because I was like, what if I think it's not the right vehicle? But I did have a great, great boss who was like, you need to look at it and really believe in it.

No sacred cows.
