WSJ’s Aaron Zitner breaks down what the Journal’s latest poll tells about Americans’ growing concerns over AI development, regulation and data centers. Illustration: Xavier Tianyang Wang

https://m.wsj.net/video/20260928/e2c421f1-be2e-4a27-827c-92f299382e7a/1/hls/manifest-hd-wifi.m3u8

WSJ’s Aaron Zitner breaks down what the Journal’s latest poll tells about Americans’ growing concerns over AI development, regulation and data centers.

New WSJ Poll Reveals How Americans Feel About AI

57% of voters in our new "Wall Street Journal" poll say that the US government should take immediate steps to put safeguards around AI technology. And an even larger share in our poll, about 63% want to see a pause both in the development of AI and in the building of data centers that are needed to support AI technology. Now, we talked to 1,500 voters in this new survey, and it clearly shows that they have a strong sense of urgency around developing safeguards for artificial intelligence. In one question in our poll, 10% of voters said that AI companies should abandon the further development of AI technology. Our poll also found no agreement about who should take the lead in regulating AI. Only 7% of voters said that President Trump was best equipped to regulate AI. That shows significant skepticism of the President's approach so far.

The United States also totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control for the artificial intelligence being spoken of so much now.

President Trump has called the safety fears around AI a hoax and warned that regulation could hand an advantage to China, which is also developing AI, while slowing down what's projected to be the largest infrastructure investment ever in American history, creating thousands of jobs. Earlier this month, he said he was gonna create a new unit in government focused on AI. He said it would be called the AI force, but he gave few details about how it would operate or who would lead it. The Trump administration isn't supportive of federal oversight.

These labs need to take responsibility for themselves. They can slow down anytime they want to.

Only 12% of voters said that the AI companies themselves should take the lead in regulating the technology, even though they're the ones that have the expertise to evaluate cutting-edge AI models, and they're discussing among themselves ways to self-regulate given the inaction in Washington. And in our poll, there was very low support for giving the lead on regulating AI to either Democratic or Republican lawmakers in Congress. In fact, the top response, and this was offered completely unprompted, was none of the above. The unease with AI extends to the data centers being built around the country to support the AI technology. Lately, we've seen more politicians in both parties say that utility rate payers should be protected from rate increases that could be caused by the high energy usage from these data centers.

If you want to get rich as a state or as a town, and if you want to pay lower taxes, if you want to create tremendous wealth, if you want your house to be more valuable and everything else, you're gonna want a data center.

In our poll, 62% of voters said that they supported a pause on the building of AI data centers, and that included 40% who said this is a top priority for them. AI technology has the potential to boost productivity and improve our lives, but AI systems have also shown that they can go rogue and ignore their creators' instructions with advisors telling Trump that he's out of step with voters on this issue and many AI executives calling for safeguards. And now the results of our poll, the message is clear, large majorities of Americans say that artificial intelligence needs some supervision.
