NTT DATA CEO: Most Companies Are Thinking About AI the Wrong Way

We are sort of at a unique position where we see both the demand and the supply side of the equation as it relates to AI. So we're the world's third largest data center provider. So we see the infrastructure built out, right? So we've already spent the world spent about $2 trillion. We're gonna spend somewhere around five to seven more trillion dollars by 2030 on AI infrastructure. And then we are also a tech services company. So we help larger enterprises with their AI led transformations, which is sort of the diffusion of the technology into enterprises. So we see both sides of the equation. Now clearly the infrastructure build out is way ahead of the diffusion of the technology in the enterprise, but I think we've seen an inflection point, I would say, over the last 12 months, right? And where, you know, I think the success recipe kind of sort of, enterprises know, and there's only about 20% of the enterprises that really know what they're doing. But because the joke used to be, "I see AI everywhere, but I don't see it in my PnL," but it's starting to show up now. And the winners that are sort of doing that, they do a few things right. One is they don't go and solve for everything in the company, right? They basically pick one or two domains, or three domains, by the way, they start with a question, "How do I use AI to double my market cap?" That's sort of the framing. Then they focus on a few domains. They do end-to-end process transformations, which by the way is excruciatingly hard. It takes two, three years to do it. And it's almost always CEO led, almost always CEO led. It's not led by the CIO or the Chief Officer or whatever. And so those are the sort of the ingredients. And then the technology is the least important part of it. I mean, for all the hype that's around the models, if it costs you a dollar to sort of build an agentic application or a workflow, it costs you $2 to do the change management of the humans that are actually gonna use that technology. It's cost $3 to do the architecture around guardrail, security, ongoing token optimization, and a bunch of other things, and $4 to get the data prepped. So it's $1 for the technology, $10 for the whole thing.
