Redesigning the Office As a Destination, Not an Obligation

Elizabeth, I think that you guys say that office should be a destination, not an obligation for employees. What does that mean in practical terms? Does that just mean like, you know, having a nice cafeteria and a gym or something? Or is there more to it than that?

No, I mean, I, first of all, I love that you already know the destination, not an obligation. You know, it really is about being a place that brings people together, that connects them deeply and truly with the purpose of the organization, that helps build relationships. We're really seeing that so many companies are suffering, because their team members don't have those relationships. They're used to doing independent work, to getting things done, but not to bringing different voices together. And so what it looks like are spaces that allow people to connect on an everyday basis, as well as spaces that allow them to get their work done. So the private spaces, the focus spaces, the enclosed spaces are just as important as those social and shared spaces.

But of course, everything's been turned upside down. And you're sort of alluding to that.

Yeah.

Andy: Since COVID.

Yeah.

So how specifically has the office and office buildings changed since COVID?

Yeah, the, so really interesting, the offices themselves have really learned a lot from what we've done in COVID. So it is much more hospitality focused, much more residential feel, much more human centered, realizing that people like those kinds of spaces, comfort spaces, spaces to take a break, to take a mental break. So those would be a private space. Much more connection to outdoor space, views, biophilia, again, those things that are about human wellness and wellbeing really brought into the space, even more so than just places, you know, to plug in into your computer. So it's connection and wellbeing.

And Elizabeth and I are seeing a lot of our projects also with these headquarters in these major brands, building an experimentation space, you know, innovation labs, opportunities for R and D to happen. You know, part of the everyday, not necessarily over in that corner of the building.
