Bridging the Gap: Attracting Next-Gen Talent to Wealth Management

There is an interesting disconnect, it seems, that a lot of, there's this need for younger people and a lot of the younger people are not even really aware of the wealth management as a career option. Many of them think about traditional, you know, vocations, medicine, law, or if they think about the world of business, it might be more like Wall Street or iBanking or something. But to your point, there's this whole huge ecosystem and need of talent and there's so many ways to get in and it's not all about being a quant. EQ is incredibly important in this business, which is, you know, relationships are extremely important. You have spoken at Notre Dame, Princeton, Columbia about, you know, how the RIA industry can better attract this next generation of talent. I'd love to hear more about this 'cause I think it's a really critically important question point for the industry. It's aware of it, but I still think there's just this enormous opportunity where there's, a bridge is needed, if you will, to get the message out and to connect these younger people with these opportunities.

Yeah. I mean, I love the question, I love the topic. And you know, as I said in the, in a little bit of the biographical background, I came to this industry by accident and I think there are a lot of schools, including my alma mater, Notre Dame, where there are very clear defined paths that say, you know, get into the business school, go down the path of investment banking, go down the path of consulting. We haven't done a great job as an industry giving people visibility into the amazing career paths, the rewarding career paths that exist in the wealth management space and I think are optimal in the independent wealth side. So it's a passion of mine to get, you know, engaged with young people and give them visibility.

Mm-hmm.

You made another point. I think the wealth management space, it can be a great career change for people. If you were in accounting and you get grounded in the details of accounting, but realize you actually want more client engagement, there's a great path. If you have a legal background, some of our best advisors are former attorneys. They understand how to synthesize information. They understand contracts and nuance. They can think creatively around trust and estate planning. So I feel like the wealth management space is an unbelievable platform. We just have to do a better job of getting younger kids to know the career path options are there and not feel like, "Well, the only way I can be successful is to get into an investment banking program where I'm going to work 90 hours a week, you know, be buried in spreadsheets," and so I'm passionate about it.

Yeah.

I was at Notre Dame, they held an initial inaugural wealth management symposium last year and it was all about that. It was about bringing people together that have been successful, had amazing careers in wealth management and telling those stories so undergraduates could recognize that those potential pathways exist.
