Success Is Overrated. Significance Is ‘Where It’s At.’

If you could offer one piece of advice to advisors listening today, what would it be?

I would say that your story matters, and take time to dig into it, because it's really why you do what you do. And if you take time to go deep on yourself, that's gonna pay huge dividends for your team, your client, your firm, and your community.

Okay, so after hearing your story, what do you want most for people to understand about your journey and your mission going forward?

This is gonna sound super counter-cultural, but I would say to embrace hardship, to embrace pain and suffering. Because if you embrace those, for me, I would say God has helped me get better and not bitter from that pain and suffering. There's always stuff to learn from that. And I would also say I've been on a journey, Ray, of what I would call success to significance. So for a lot of years, I was selfishly chasing success, hoping it would fill this void in my heart, and it never did, right? So I'd also tell you success is a little overrated, but significance is where it's at.

It never gets old.

Yeah. And to me, significance is, for me, it's God first, my faith, and then it's others-focused. Success is many times self-focused-

Self-focused, sure.

Significance is other-focused. And I love the quote that, "My fruit grows on other people's trees."
