Summit Trail Advisors’ Strategy for Growing Talent From Within

Let widen the lens and just talk also just about the bigger macro backdrop here. There's this very large intergenerational wealth transfer that's underway. We're well aware of that. And that too is also something that's happening in, if you will, almost in slow motion, but that's very much happening. And it's very, we also know that so many younger clients prefer younger advisors. You need to understand them, communicate effectively, et cetera. So these, you know, multi-generational relationships have many more stakeholders at the table and yes, it is very important to prepare for that and embrace it and not just give lip service and you guys are doing it. So tell me a little bit about the career path aspect. You know, and what's involved with each role. So we have like the client service analyst, associate VP, advisor, the whole progression. And I don't know however much time you want to spend on that, but just discussing the arc and the responsibilities involved, et cetera, would be interesting to know.

Yeah, when I joined, I was a client service analyst. And my view was my job is to not only serve our clients in whatever they needed on a day-to-day basis, but I also viewed Peter and the, you know, call it more senior people on the team as my client, too. And you're really just learning the business and how to do things. And so, you know, looking back 10 years, I think it's super important because I can still get into Addepar and do things and send a wire if I need to. You know, over time as you start growing up, if you will, at Summit Trail, you start taking on more client-facing responsibilities. And that is, you know, in a meeting, instead of maybe being a note taker in those first year or two, now I'm starting to talk about what was going on in the portfolio, how are we thinking about the world, and talking about more significant aspects, if you will. And during all this, Peter also refers to me as his partner, which then starts to build trust. And then over time, when the client sees that I, or whoever it is that's more junior, if you will, at Summit Trail, can talk about these things in an intelligent manner, it builds the trust and leads to a very easy handoff, if you will.

Yeah, and I'd imagine on the client end, they fully understand why you're doing it and appreciate the methodical approach to it, which seems very studied, if you will, and deliberate.

Yeah, no, I think it was kind of a natural progression, right? You know, I think to be honest, not every client was like open arms, like, "Oh, this is great. I'm going to get handed off to the younger person on the team," right? So there was a little massaging that, you know, needed to be happening there. But a lot of it was just like, you know, trust us, right? Like, number one, I'm not going anywhere. I'm gonna be at this firm forever and I'm gonna be, you know, a call away if you need me, and I'm gonna be in a lot of these meetings for the next few years. But, you know, there were some clients where we kinda had to say like, you know, this is our vision of how we want to grow the team and trust us that we're gonna, you know, do it the right way. And once kind of Jon got in there and started doing his thing, you know, that's kinda when the magic started happening. And then we could tell, you know, it was gonna be all good. And then it was funny, like, you know, I'd see some of these clients a year later at, you know, a client event over the summer or something we do socially, and they would, you know, be joking with me like, "Man, Jon's way better than you. He's all over us. He's, you know, communicating, proactive. He's got so much more time." And that's exactly why we did it, right? Like I'm, you know, helping running the firm and doing some other things. So it was really helpful to have Jon, you know, come in and take the lead on some of those.
