The State of Women in Wealth Management Today

Now I wanna pivot the discussion a little bit. You are the executive director of the Women's Leadership Alliance. I wanna talk about women in wealth management. What's happening right now? How have things progressed? Where do you see things going? Let's just kinda unpack that a little bit.

I think it's an exciting time to see that there is some real great energy and focus being put to how do we go about addressing the fact that for the last two decades, there's been very little change in the representation of women, specifically in the financial advising role, which is where the Women's Leadership Alliance focuses. And it's a head scratcher when you first start to kind of really dig in because you recognize that some pretty smart people have been trying to make improvements and make headway here. Our organization specifically works in a firm agnostic way as a not-for-profit. And the idea is to bring this unsiloed kind of effort to the challenge of attracting more women into the profession, retaining them and advancing them through the ranks of leadership and wealth management. And our kind of perspective, and I believe this firmly, as it, you know, kind of connects to the idea of a team, you build a community, you get organized, and you get organized and then you make sure that you're allowing the best ideas to come to the table and to have really honest conversations about why, you know, what are the barriers here? And then, you know, really try and exert as much influence as possible in ensuring that the ideas, the best ideas are landing where decision-makers are.

Where are you seeing success in terms of your outreach and efforts in terms of bringing more women into the industry?

Well, we're in the process of creating regional circles right now. Basically, you know, when you think of kind of coming into an organization, we have a membership community, and typically when someone comes and joins a membership community, they do so because they get certain association benefits, right? What we have done, and this is key to our effort, we call our members ambassadors, so we really are asking them not just to become members so that they can reap the benefits and get some of the perks of being a member, but because we're asking them to join a movement, you know, it's kind of asking them to be a part of a cause and that's why they're ambassadors. And so our members, based on their own time, availability, and interests, both kind of reap the benefits of career development, professional development, mentorship, and/or they give back and go into colleges and speak to women about the path of financial advising, or they give webinars, or they act as mentors. And so it's really kind of an ecosystem that we're creating and we're finding that to be something that really appeals within the industry and to a lot of women, they want both sides of that. They want the support, but they also wanna be part of something that's advancing the move.

What have been the dynamics since COVID? Has that changed at all the trajectory? 'Cause I know for many aspects of business in general, wealth management, there have been different shifts. Has that brought in more people or not?

Our organization was just a mentorship program, and I actually joined the organization after COVID to kind of expand it into this national effort. And I think that, you know, COVID did, as it did in so many other spaces, it had its things that really set things back and then it also had things that helped to accelerate. And I think that we're just now coming out of the setback period as it relates to it bringing more women, kind of engaging more women in the profession and in the industry. We're seeing this gap. There is a succession issue of women who are reaching retirement and would like to have another woman take over their practice or their book. And there's a gap in the availability of women to do so. But we are seeing, and there aren't strong numbers yet, but I think just from what we're seeing that more young women open to and interested in coming into the field.

To the extent you can speak about the following, what are you hearing collectively from younger women in college or graduating vis-a-vis wealth management? Is there any, you know, loud refrain, like we want certainty, a career path, more pay? I mean, I'm just curious, is there a messaging issue where a lot of people may not even be aware this is a great career path? 'Cause a lot of people think of traditional vocations like law and medicine and business and what have you. And yet, a lot of people have a misconception, they think, oh, to be a wealth management, you have to be, you know, math geek or something. It's like, no, no, no, there are a ton of different skills and that can be useful in the wealth management, so I think speak to all that.

I love this question and I love the way you phrased it too, because inside of the way you ask the question is part of the challenge. Women are not a monolith, you know. There isn't a singular solution to this. And perhaps that's part of what has held back real progress is that, you know, trying to come up with what is the thing. And so it's all of the things that you said. I think it's definitely, there's a branding issue on the career in general that must be overcome. And then there are some practical, you know, considerations as well. And women are still primary caregivers and there are factors that in influence the kind of, you know, the kinds of careers that they go into and stay in.
