Automation Anywhere CEO: AI’s Real Value Lies in Applied Use, Not More Data Centers

I'm here with Mihir Shukla, the CEO of Automation Anywhere on the fourth day of Davos. How has your Davos been so far?

It has been a fantastic Davos. So much has happened in four days.

It has been an eventful four days. But what's your purpose here? What do you, what's the message you're trying to get across?

I think the, two important messages. The first is that as fascinated we all are about the power of LLMs and agentic AI, we are talking about the power of applied AI, and how can we get more AI diffused into all the sectors of economy? Because that is the real power of AI. And countries who do that would have a dramatically different outcomes. And that has been less of it, right? We are focused a lot more on infrastructure, which is awesome, great to have infrastructure, but we need to move faster on applying AI into every sector.

On the application front

Applications.

Why do you think it has been slow?

I think we, rightly so, you need an infrastructure before anything happens, and every sector starts by building. I think of AI is at a place where internet was with AOL.

Interesting.

You need AOL to connect things before Amazon and Google and everybody else is possible,

right?

Yeah.

But the value capture always happens in application, not in infrastructure.

Yeah.

So I think we have a great amount of infrastructure already. Somebody was saying that if we stop building any data centers or anything, we could still do 80% of everything we want to do with what we have. So think about that. We continue to build more, but imagine, if you could do 80% of everything we have, that is multi-trillion dollar impact to productivity and economy.

Yeah. There've been a number of studies that suggest that maybe only 10 to 15% of companies have been able to create real value with AI at this point. What do you think is holding them back?

I think very focused approach on how it can transform. There are two things required for it. One is willingness to reimagine, because this is not a technology like many others, where it is just about cheaper, better, faster. You have an opportunity to reimagine the workflows and turn it on their heads. You can do things that you could never do before. For example, one of the message we have been sharing with the audience here is, as companies are deploying the solution, the answer is not to have 500 different applications with 500 different copilots. That doesn't sound like an easy way to operate a company. I think the answer is to reimagine an idea of an AI-first autonomous enterprise, where you are re-imagining how AI can drive business and where do you add people where they can have a meaningful impact. And when you think like that, with a focused approach in various aspects of your business, the impact could be significant, sometimes in multi-billion dollars.

Yeah. And what do you think people here in Davos are missing about the AI revolution? What are they getting wrong?

I think I was encouraged by the fact that so many, compared to last year-

Yeah.

there were so many more conversations about applied AI. There were so many conversations about AI agents and how they can transform businesses. Not everybody has answers, but the fact that we are seeking that is a beginning of a next revolution.

So 2026 looks to be an important year?

It does.
