Axis Capital CEO: Inside the Convergence of Cyber, Climate, and Geopolitical Risk

I'm here with Vincent Tizzio, who is the CEO of Axis Capital. Vince, thank you very much for taking some time to talk with us.

Great to be with you.

You insure companies against all kinds of risks. I wonder what you think is the most underestimated risk that people here in Davos need to pay more attention to?

I think it's the confluence of risk, Alan. If you think about climate, energy resilience, cyber, and increased corporate scrutiny that directors and officers are facing, it is the aggregation of all of those exposures that we really need to be mindful to.

All of those coming together.

You bet.

Well, let's talk a little bit about each of those. You talked about cyber.

For sure.

Is cyber risk increasing? I mean, it's always there in the background, but are we seeing more of it?

The risk landscape facing cyber is made more challenging in geopolitical uncertainty, geopolitical and economic uncertainty in the different markets that we operate, and if you think about the landscape around what kind of losses are arising, you think about ransomware, and ransomware losses are increasing. The severity of those losses is equally increasing and so bringing financial wherewithal through the purchase of your cyber offering is critically important.

You mentioned geopolitical. Børge Brende, who is the President of the World Economic Forum, said this is the most complicated geopolitical backdrop that he's seen since 1945. Do you agree with that, and how should companies be thinking about that from a risk standpoint?

I think it's hard to argue that these are more challenging times, certainly not unprecedented. I think the key to managing through this risk landscape is to have a holistic approach, at least in the provision of how you buy your insurance and understanding the interrelationship between the products that you buy, the quantum of the limit that you buy, and equally importantly, the terms and conditions is vitally important.

Yeah, and what about the economy? What's your outlook for the next year? Where are the risks on the economic horizon?

Well, I think they're severalfold and I think that it's too difficult for us to predict perfectly what the economy will be, but we see different economies throughout the different marketplaces we compete. By and large as a specialist, we see continued need. Just given the risk landscape that our customers are facing, there's an increasing pull toward specialization and we think we're well-positioned to help.

So do you come to Davos every year?

We've been here for the last couple of years, yeah.

Yeah, and what's your message in Davos? Why do you come? What's the purpose for having Axis Capital here?

Several. First, to listen, to learn, and to share. Secondly, to understand how well-positioned we are in the provision of the products that we're bringing to market, to hear the voice of our customer, and also to identify new opportunities.

Yeah, well, I wanna talk about opportunities because we've been focusing on risk, but what do you see is the biggest opportunities in front of companies in 2026?

The increased need for specialization. It is, certainly for us, an unprecedented time in seeing the risk landscape against these integrated offerings that we're bringing to market. You know, climate doesn't just affect the property policy. You know, there are unintended consequences of severe convective storms, hurricanes, there are challenges that result from ransomware events, and ultimately, how companies think about buying all of these different products requires specialization and we think we're uniquely positioned to deliver that.

Vince, you've been in this job, what, 2 1/2 years?

2 1/2 years, yeah.

Pretty extraordinary, from the market perspective, pretty extraordinary 2 1/2 years. I think your stock is up, what, 2x-

Yeah.

From when you started.

Started, yeah.

What's your secret? How have you been able to create that kind of value?

I think it's the we orientation of our company. We've got a great culture, great specialist practitioners, good attentiveness to the needs of our customers, consistent delivery of product and service. I think that's the formula.

What's the future look like?

We're optimistic. Given the landscape that we're competing in, the need for specialized offerings, we think we're well-positioned in our chosen markets. We have great franchise value amongst our distribution partners. This is an intermediated business. And finally, the culture of our company is enduring and we feel really, really blessed to be able to help our customers around the world.
