Bloom Energy CEO: AI Can’t Rely on the Power Grid Anymore

I am here with KR Sridhar, the founder and CEO of Bloom Energy, and a good friend. We met when you first started Bloom almost 20 years ago now, right?

Yes, last weekend was our 25th anniversary.

Amazing! And you've built it up into a company valued at $36 billion and you're still going strong.

You know, we are just getting started. Think about this. A new energy technology coming from innovation to commercial. When solar batteries, turbine engines, 40 to 50 years is the median age to get to a gigawatt. We have gotten to a gigawatt in less than 25 years, not as an industry, but as one company. And we are just getting started.

Can you give us a quick description of the technology?

So what we do is take natural gas or hydrogen or biogas, we are agnostic, but natural gas, the most abundant source of clean energy, the chemical energy in that is extracted in a solid state process directly to electrical energy without first burning it, making it into heat, making a paddle wheel run called a turbine, making the mechanical energy, then into electrical energy, putting it very far away from where you need it. Having a highway called a transmission bring the electricity, having a surface street called distribution, bringing it to your point of use. You have six middlemen between you and what you want.

You do it on site.

We do it on site in a single step. That's one. The second thing is the world has gone to a digital age from mechanical age.

Yeah.

Chips speak Japanese, grid speaks English. AC, high voltage, DC, low voltage. So you put all these gear just like you carry your black bricks that connect your computer to the socket. The data center is filled off devices like this, it's a total waste of capital an efficiency loss and reliability loss. We speak Japanese, so we make DC power exactly at the level that the chip needs. We can directly feed into it. So it is the first energy technology that is designed, conceived of, and built, for the digital age.

So how much of your demand these days is data centers?

We roughly, one third of our business was data centers.

Wow.

The others were commercial industrial before AI.

Yeah.

Now, I would say for the next few years as I see it, it's going to dominate.

It's gonna dominate your business.

Yeah. Yeah.

Oh, well, it makes total sense. So you're here in Davos. What's your mission in Davos this year?

Well, our mission in Davos this year is twofold. One, to educate policy makers, leaders, business leaders, that when you need the amount of power that we need, a big data center, we simply keep saying one gigawatt data center. One gigawatt is what the city of San Francisco uses.

Hmm.

That going into one building about a few football fields big, you cannot use the grid. It is like you want to dominate the highway.

Yeah.

No, you need to make your own power.

Yeah.

So onsite power has to be made and when you do that, don't go to the mechanical age infrastructure and put all the bandaids. We have a better mousetrap for you. This is not a faster horse, it's a car.

What's your market share of data center electricity at this point?

Very small today because we are getting started. And think about this. In the past, if you needed a large data center You'll go to the grid.

Yeah.

That's the comments. Now the grid is not available. It's forcing people to think differently.

You've been coming to Davos for many years, right?

Yes, I have.

Are you disturbed by the fact that sustainability, I mean, normally I would see you at panels about the energy transition or panels about sustainability or maybe panels about the path to net zero. All of that stuff has been scrubbed from the agenda this year at the request of President Trump. Does that matter?

You know, it really doesn't matter for the following reason. AI and what AI is doing in a very strange way, is going to help accelerate our journey to clean. Here's why. Those companies and their stakeholders hold them to a higher standard. That standard doesn't change every two years and four years based on the political cycle, number one. So if we are able to offer them clean and sustainable, that's also affordable. And this is what was missing in the equation. Clean and sustainable were talked about as though it was not a pocketbook issue. Nobody's gonna pay more.

Yeah.

They want clean. And we are going to be able to drive towards that because of this huge demand in AI. So the transition is ultimately going to happen, because the market needs disruption and when you disrupt now, nobody's gonna be stupid enough to make it dirty. They're gonna make it clean.

It's now driven by sheer economics, not by hot air in Davos.

Exactly. Exactly. Or the cold air that we compensate with the hot air from what we do.
