Crusoe CEO Chase Lochmiller: AI Is Also a Blue-Collar Job Creator

I am here with Chase Lochmiller, who is the CEO of Crusoe, a fascinating company. Started out as Bitcoin mining, but then pivoted to AI infrastructure, now has a valuation of $10 billion. Chase, amazing story. Tell me what you're doing here in Davos this week. What's your mission?

You know, Crusoe is focused on helping develop and energize the AI computing infrastructure needed to power the future of the intelligent economy. And, you know, that requires having a lot of partners. So, you know, this week I'm focused on meeting with a lot of partners, ranging from supply chain partners to financing partners, to government partners, to customer partners, and there's a lot of different partners across the ecosystem--

And what does Crusoe add to that mix? You're dealing with giant companies, right? Microsoft, Nvidia, you worked in Texas with OpenAI, Oracle. What's Crusoe's special sauce that makes sure it's valuable?

Sure. You know, Crusoe is really focused on enabling AI infrastructure to be useful. So, you know, there are a lot of individual components ranging from the GPU to the chiller and, you know, power generation equipment. It takes actually a lot of work and complexity to assemble all of these things together in a useful facility where you can actually produce intelligence.

Yeah, yeah. So AI is clearly the hot topic here in Davos. You walk up and down the promenade to all these corporate pavilions branding AI, but there are some people who think we may be in an AI bubble. What do you think?

We may be in a bubble, but you know, from what we're seeing in our seat, the demand is insatiable. You know, the amount of compute infrastructure we're able to deliver and the ecosystem's able to deliver is simply just not enough to meet the amount of demand. We see the adoption curves for people using applications to be really dramatic and exponential. And we see a lot of value creation happening across enterprises and across companies that really lead me to believe that we're not in a bubble, and this--

This is gonna keep--

This new AI digital labor force is actually gonna radically transform the economy and drive massive economic growth.

What's the biggest constraint in building all that out? Is it capital? Is it energy? Is it chips? What do you worry about?

Maybe the unspoken bottleneck in the ecosystem is really labor. You know, the amount of people--

Interesting.

Required to make this happen is really substantial, and it's actually counter to the trend that like AI's gonna take everybody's jobs. From our perspective, AI's gonna be the massive job creator, you know, enabling--

But that can't be for everyone.

Well, I mean, it's gonna create new jobs, and it's gonna... Actually, we're seeing this massive resurgence in the blue collar economy, you know, building in AI data center like what we're doing in Abilene, Texas.

It's creating lots of jobs in Abilene.

8,000 people on site every single day.

Wow! Yeah.

And long term, it's gonna be about 2,000 people operating the facility, but that's just one campus, and there's many such campuses that just need a lot of electricians, a lot of mechanics, a lot of plumbers and a lot of IT technicians to operate this equipment.

Fascinating. What's the one thing you think people here in Davos are getting wrong about the AI build out?

The one thing that folks are getting wrong here about the AI build out is that... Well, I was gonna say, I was gonna talk about the labor, but--

You've already--

Yeah, yeah, I've sort of... You know, the labor's maybe the contrarian take here, but I would say, you know, my perspective is actually the, you know, there are big ambitious builds and a lot of plans and forecasts. I think it's gonna be an under... I think we're gonna be under-supplied on compute for a long period of time, and I think, you know, we're actually not being ambitious enough as a society because of the opportunity for AI to radically transform the labor force.
