I am here in Davos with Michael Dell, the CEO founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, reinvented it several times. You've had an amazing run. What are you doing here in Davos this year?

Well, I'm doing what I usually do here, Alan, which is meeting with a lot of customers.

Yeah?

And partners. And, you know, it's always interesting to sort of get the pulse from our customers around the world and, you know, what's going on in central Europe and. Yeah, I've been doing this a long time.

Yeah, no, I know, but you've been doing it pretty well for a long time. So AI is obviously a big topic here. If you walk up and down the promenade, all the companies have big AI pavilions. There seems to be a sense among the CEOs I talked to that this is gonna be a breakthrough year for artificial intelligence. What are you getting from your clients?

Completely agree. And, you know, last year I think there was early enthusiasm, but a lot of questions were out there. Some of those are still out there, but, you know, the pace of deployment and engagement and activity is tremendous and.

And faster than it was last year.

Sure, yeah, the demand is extraordinary.

Yeah.

And look, organizations have figured out that not only is this an enormous productivity efficiency opportunity, but it's a way to reimagine what you do fundamentally, you know, as a business. And more broadly than that, you know, AI is enabling every human endeavor to advance in a significant way. So whether you're doing drug discovery or trying to, you know, do something more mundane inside of a company, it's accelerating all that.

We've seen a couple of polls here this week that suggest there's a gap between the CEOs who are super enthusiastic about what this technology can do, and their employees who are a little anxious, a little worried about what this might mean for their jobs, or haven't quite yet seen the promise. How do we close that gap?

Well, I think it's really important to communicate inside a business why you're doing this and how it's gonna work and what does it actually mean for each person. And don't just sort of inflict this on people. You know, think about it in the context of, let's say you work at a company and you hear, let's say you're a young person, right? You work at a company, you hear your company's doing AI, right? You might be scared, right? The alternative is you work at a company and you hear your company's not doing AI.

May be more reason to be scared.

You might be more scared.

You better be scared, yeah.

So which of those is, is better, right? Well, we know the answer. The answer is, we're doing AI, right?

Yeah, yeah.

And so how do we understand how this can help us be a better company? How do we create new skills and retool our skills so that we're more successful and ultimately create more opportunity?

Geopolitics has been a big theme this week, probably a bigger theme than I would've expected a week ago. How is that affecting the business outlook?

You know, the sentiment that I get from our customers is they're super excited about digital transformation and AI. You know, the European CEOs are kind of secretly talking about how they appreciate that this point of European competitiveness has been highlighted.

So it could be good for them?

Well, they're frustrated.

Yeah.

Because, you know, the policy makers have not made it super easy for them, and they know that changes are needed.

Interesting.

And so, that's in a way helpful.

So you think this change in the world order we're seeing may turn out to be a positive?

I don't really know, to tell you the truth, but what I see from our customers is they understand that the pace of change in the world is accelerating. That, you know, competitiveness is paramount. And, you know, what we do is incredibly important to that. And, you know, we're engaged with them and they all want more of it.

Yep. So you and your wife, changing the subject a little bit here. You and your wife have done something extraordinary, which is to give $6 billion of your own money to this program to fund savings accounts for young people in lower income zip codes. Can you talk about what you had in mind when you did that and what you hope the effect will be?

Yeah, absolutely. So, you know, on July 4th of last year, this Invest America Act was passed into law, and it provides that, you know, every newborn child gets a thousand dollars from the government. It also sets up an account for every child in America. So when you file your tax returns and you claim the child tax credit, you basically claimed the account for your child. Now, we thought it'd be a fun idea for for the children that aren't getting the thousand dollars from the government.

Because they were born earlier.

They were born earlier. So between the ages of two and 10 years old that live in the zip codes where the median income is $150,000 or less.

Yeah.

To give $250, a kind of a starter on your financial future, to 25 million of those kids. And look, we know that the most important investment we can make is in our people and especially the children, right? And we also know that when a child has an account like this, they're way more likely to graduate from high school, go on to college, buy a home, not be incarcerated, and all sorts of good things happen.

It's super impressive. But are you encouraging other people with means to do the same?

I'm not running around with a tin cup, but I would hope others.

Yeah.

Others will help out.

You know, decided to adopt the state of Connecticut, right? And there'll be some others.

That's where I live, so.

Right.

I don't. You know, this Invest America program basically creates a platform for anybody to contribute to the account.

Yeah.

So a parent, a grandparent, an aunt, an uncle.

Yep.

Your company can match the government's contribution. We're encouraging all companies to do that. And, you know, the power of compounding kicks in and I think there will be more philanthropists that see this as a powerful way to, you know, really invest in our children.

Yeah.

Which ultimately is the most important investment we can make. Even more important than technology, right?

Yeah.

We have great technology, but we don't have a thriving youth that has an optimistic view of their future and is thinking long term, understands, you know, that somebody cares about them. We've got a real problem.
