I'm here with Cristiano Amon, who is the CEO of Qualcomm, and we have a lot to talk about. Cristiano, thanks for taking some time.

Oh, happy to talk to you, Alan.

So, what do you see as your mission here in Davos this year?

Look, it's been for us every Davos over the past several years. It's a great opportunity to meet different industries, especially as Qualcomm has continued to transform as a company, and we're going to a bunch of different industries. I think you probably remember a few years ago, we're like new into the automotive industry. Now we're new into a lot of the industrial AI. So it's been a great opportunity to meet new companies.

You noticed I've got my meta sunglasses here. You're in there, aren't you?

Very good. Absolutely we are, yes.

So AI is obviously a huge theme. You walk up and down the promenade. You see it everywhere. Some people think Qualcomm was late to the AI game, but you're all-in right now, correct?

Look, we're not late. I think people were late to appreciate the importance of Edge AI.

Alan: Interesting.

I think there's so much attention that has been given to the data center, which is great. I think we enter in the data center as well. But now you're starting to see people finally realize what we have been busy several years building a platform. The Edge AI is also going to be important. AI is changing computers. The software will always find its most efficient computer no matter what. And we're starting to see a lot of activity now finally at the Edge. This is an Edge AI device.

Edge product use sunglasses. I love them. I wear them when I walk to work and, you know, call my assistant, ask questions. And I assume they will get better and better.

They will get better and better.

Your transformation is also pushing you further into the chip business. Are you, like, trying to compete with NVIDIA? What's your goal there?

Look, first of all, I think this question is because our enter into the data center space. I think there are a couple of things happening on the data center. First of all, all of the AI data centers are moving from training to inference.

Yes.

When you go to inference, you need a different architecture. I think NVIDIA acquisition of Grok is probably validation of that, that you have different type of workloads. And sometimes a GPU is good for a lot of things and maybe certain workloads you want a more efficient compute. I think that's what we're doing. To your question about competing with NVIDIA, look, there's a massive opportunity in the data center. I don't think there's room for other companies. It's not about one company doing everything. The opportunity is so massive, and I think we just need to get a little bit.

You talked about your transformation. I saw you quoted recently comparing this battle in AI to a battle between gladiators. Explain the metaphor.

Yeah, look, we, you know, Qualcomm is probably well known for the phone business, right? And when you think about the phone business, especially every year you have to launch a flagship smartphone, and everything needs to come out right. It's a leading node chip. The phone industry is the one that every year is a new leading node process chip on the manufacturing. You also need it to have a lot of new capabilities. And I think we use that internally. Actually, I use that on all hands. I always say that we are in the gladiator business because if you're a gladiator, you go to the Coliseum, and you have three possible outcomes. You win, you lose, you both lose. And then if you win, the only thing you really accomplish is the right to go to the Coliseum one more time.

You've got to go right back into the ring.

And I think that has been our business, and I think that's the technology business. You have success today, it means nothing. It means you have to be successful again, you know, next year and the year after. I think you have to keep the innovation engine going, and I think that's part of the history of Qualcomm.

The frenzy right now is so crazy. I mean, I've never seen anything like it in my career, and my career has been pretty long. Is there any chance that it will turn out to have been a bubble?

Look, it's really hard to answer this question, but I go back to something I said before, which is if you go back to the year 2000, right, when you have the dot-com thing, And people imagine what was the Internet going to look like. What they imagined at the time, the Internet is bigger today. It's way bigger than people imagined. But it didn't happen all in one year, right? I think AI is the same thing. AI on the long term is probably underestimated, under hype. AI is going to be bigger than people think. But, you know, how fast will things pan out, we don't know. I think right now there is a lot of activity. Maybe we'll continue that way. Maybe we'll change pace. We don't know. But we know it's a transformative technology for sure.

Cristiano, last question. Davos is an opportunity for people to look out to the year ahead. From where you sit, what do you see as the biggest opportunity of 2026? And what do you see as the biggest risk of 2026?

Look, the biggest opportunity, and it's a biased question given where we sit. But I think people finally see into '26, I think, the opportunity that exists on the edge, especially if you have the ability to do a lot of processing on the edge. We know this has been true for phones, for PCs. I think the models will find its most efficient computer. And I think the risk is, I think the biggest risk for 2026, It's people not to understand the transformation that is happening, especially because I look of what is happening with physical AI and industrial, and you're going to have opportunities everywhere. It's not just about a data center. And I think people that don't see that are probably going to be blindsided.

So the risk is being left behind.

That is correct.
