TIAA CEO Thasunda Brown Duckett on Fixing America’s Retirement System

I am here with Thasunda Brown Duckett, the CEO of TIAA. Thank you so much for taking some time for us today.

Great to be here.

And great to have you in Davos.

Thank you.

So what's your message to the Davos community this year?

Yeah, our message is coming together as policy leaders, business leaders, to make sure that more Americans can have a secure retirement. When we look at the landscape of the ecosystem, we know that 40% of Americans do not have enough. They run out of money. We know that 11,000 to 12,000 people are reaching retirement age every day, and that's on the backdrop of a $4 trillion savings gap. And we know about 11,000 to 12,000 young people are entering the workforce. And so when I think about the challenges, there's three that we're highlighting. One, there's a savings gap. We have to make sure that we're doing everything that we can to help people save during their earning years. And so what that means is enrolling early, auto enrollment, making sure that at least the default is at 6%, increasing 1% every year to the max. We know that there's an access gap. 59 million Americans do not have access to a workplace plan. And so we're talking about what can we do together in terms of sound policy to make it easier for small business owners to provide workplace plans so that their employee base can get on a path to having a secure retirement. And then lastly, we're talking about the guarantee gap. We know now that only 12% of Americans have a defined benefit plan, which is guaranteed income. And we know social security is not enough. And so how do we make sure that within a good design plan, you have exposure to equities, bonds, but also lifetime income.

Your retirees, the retirees you serve, are mostly in the United States?

Yes. Correct.

All in the United States?

Yes.

And so, are you looking for policy change?

Yes. And so the good news is this has been a bipartisan topic. You know, everyone can understand the impact of what it means to retire and having confidence that income can be the outcome. And so the good news is it is bipartisan. We had real success with Secure Act 1.0, 2.0, but we think there's more to be done when we think about making it easier.

Well, you're gonna have half of the Trump administration descending on Davos over the next two days.

Yes.

Will you have a chance to get that message across then?

Yeah, absolutely. I mean, in all the meetings we're in, we're talking about it not just with the leaders of the Trump administration, but also with business leaders, because it takes good policy with good government. And again, it's bipartisan. But also business leaders coming together.

Look, you oversee, what, $1.5 trillion in assets. Obviously the economy and the strength of the economy is critical to the returns on those investments. How do you see the economy right now? What's the outlook for 2026 and beyond?

We're cautiously optimistic. I mean, it's a strong labor market. Companies are having strong balance sheets. We know that there's still uncertainty what will happen to interest rates, what's happening with the Fed, clearly the geopolitical environment, there's still immigration, there's still lots of issues. But overall, we think that we're pretty optimistic. We also see clearly the big focus is around AI. You know, we're seeing strong equity markets. A lot of that is driven by AI in technology. And so yes, there's risks, but overall we're cautiously optimistic.

Do you have any sense of whether there is an AI bubble or not? There's a lot of talk here about the potential that the market may have to do a major correction.

I think that's one of the good things about being in Davos. You're hearing all kinds of opinions and thoughts. You know, we don't see a bubble. We think that it's still early days. Clearly there's a lot of investment being made across the entire ecosystem. We as business leaders are looking at the strategies for our own companies in terms of how do we think about AI? What can it mean for our business with respect to efficiency and growth? So we don't see a bubble, but we clearly know that it's early days and there's real risk that we have to navigate through.

What's the most interesting thing you've learned since you got here in Davos?

Well, besides the traffic-

Yeah, you've learned not to get in a car.

Exactly right. You know? No. I'd say there's been good conversation. Matt Damon talking about his not-for-profit and the impact on water and what that means for women and young people.

He was right here just a minute ago.

Yes, I heard. And I just think there's a real opportunity for us to understand the importance of basic things and what that can mean for economy and how we can all participate more. So that was very interesting. And then just really talking about AI from the entire ecosystem, from data centers, to the risk, to the opportunity, to power, copper. So really getting deeper on all of the components that can provide tremendous opportunity, but also where there's a risk and where there's miss-matches as you think about how does it all have to come together to fuel the growth that we all anticipate that AI can bring.

And if you look towards the year ahead, where do you see now the biggest opportunity and where do you see the biggest risk?

Yeah, for us, making sure people can have a secure retirement, the biggest opportunity that we see is the momentum of having lifetime income embedded in target date funds. So I'm excited about that momentum and doing more to make sure that it's easier for Americans to have access to equities, bonds, and lifetime income solutions. I think the broader risk, it's just navigating the uncertainty. You know, I think, the uncertainty is the certainty, but I think the most important thing is to make sure that you have that resilience balance sheet, you control what you can control, and you make sure that you're planning for different scenarios.
