Inside the Rigorous Prep for the Westminster Dog Show

Come on, Son. Sonny, come. Let's put you in. Let's put you here. Come on, buddy. I think that people think showing dogs is easy, but there's so much more behind the scenes to making a dog win. I'm Kimberly Calvacca. I'm a professional show dog handler. I am the person that is in the ring running around presenting the dog to the judge. I've been nominated three times for handler over the year. Haven't won it yet. I'm beginning to think I'm the Susan Lucci of the dog show world, but to be nominated is an honor. This is my boy, right? Are you my boy? He's like, yeah, he's such a good boy. This is Sonny. He's competed against a lot of the top dogs in the country and has won best in show over many of them. He's excited about going to the show. I do over a hundred shows a year. This is definitely different than any other dog show. It's the most prestigious show in the world. I'm a third generation dog show handler. My grandparents got into dogs in the fifties. My grandfather won the working group at Westminster at 82 years of age and growing up, I went to the dog shows with my grandfather, who was a professional handler. I decided I loved showing dogs. It was my passion and that was what I was gonna do for a career. We'll give her some food. She's hungry. I'm showing about seven dogs this year at Westminster. Numerous breeds I've won with and I've won with generations of boxers, generations of miniature pinchers. I co-own her and bred her. The miniature pincher I'll be showing this year is eight generations to compete at Westminster. The days before Westminster are very busy. Come on, that's Tang, Tango. The dogs are like athletes. Come on, buddy. You have to become a team with the dog. You have to condition the dog to perform the way you want him to perform. It takes a couple of months to get that dog on the road to winning. So this is building muscle, teaching him to use his legs. We treadmill the dogs. We bathed and blow dried the dogs. We trimmed the dogs, we did the nails on the dogs. We cleaned their ears, we brushed their teeth. You got to see some of the dogs eat, but right now we're cooking up the winning chicken. This is the winning treat that the dogs are gonna get in there and shine. This is for the show ring only. The winning chicken is extra special for them. We use it to bait the dog and reward the dog. It helps make the dog alert and stand there and say, pick me. There he goes. Bingo. I do make money from dog handling. Come on, Digger. I get paid by show and per dog. The dogs that I house that I'm bringing to Westminster. Each dog pays board. Each dog pays a handling fee and each dog shares a prorated expense. Owners looking for a handler come to me. Or you know, people see me out there in the show ring and say, "Hey, I wanna hire her to show my dog. I like the way she presents the dog, the care she gives to the dogs" because it's my career, it's my passion. It's what I love to do. Showing dogs is not an easy lifestyle. You're away from your house from Wednesday to Sunday every week. It's something you have to love and I love it. And it's funny 'cause I met my husband through the dog shows. I showed a dog for him and years later he placed her in a home and he came back to dog shows after he got divorced and started watching me show, I tried to fix him up with a couple of friends and I thought, you know, he is a really nice guy, but he is not for me. And he kept asking me out and we went out one day and the rest is history. I feel that the dog show world started out as a man's world and it has become a woman's world. Outfits at Westminster are a big highlight for a lot of the people watching. I typically wear to the shows, a suit, a jacket, and a skirt. I don't get a new outfit for every show, but I do get a new outfit for Westminster every year. Everyone wants to see what's Kim gonna wear, what's Kim gonna wear? I do get people that say, "We're waiting to see what you're gonna wear. Can't wait to see it on TV." Sit, Tango, sit. Sit. In the right direction, please. What I'm hoping for at Westminster this year is that all my dogs show and perform well and all come home with ribbons. I do think a dog knows when it has won. They're jumping and happy and exuberant. Would love for one of them to wind up in the best in show ring. That's everybody's dream, but we'll see how it goes. Winning a show like Westminster would be a dream come true. It would be the highest achievement of my career.
