Why Greenland Matters So Much for Trump’s Arctic Strategy

Sune: Greenland has become a geopolitical flash point. Fueled by President Trump's insistence that the US must control the island.

All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland.

In fact, the US used to have a very significant military presence here after the Second World War and during the Cold War. For the next three days, I will travel by plane, dog sled, and boat across a remote arctic wilderness in Greenland. So, I guess this is how you get 16 dogs into a boat. To reach an old abandoned American military base. I'm here to better understand what it would look like if the US were to open more military bases here today. I've now arrived in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. It took me a little over 12 hours to get here and it's only really the first step of my journey here on this island. Until recently, many locals in Nuuk, a city of about 20,000 people, actually worried that the US might invade Greenland. Pipaluk Lynge is head of the Greenlandic Parliament Committee on Foreign and Security Policy. Trump says that he wants Greenland for national security purposes, but until the end of the Cold War, the US had up to 17 military bases and as many as 10,000 soldiers here. Today there are fewer than 200 American soldiers in one base. This network of bases, radars and weather stations gave the US a foothold near the North Pole and helped monitor potential Russian missiles and submarines in the Arctic. Trust between US forces and Greenlanders has been an issue in the past as well.

Reporter: There's more trouble for the Americans at North Star Bay near Thule in Greenland, and it's over those four H bombs they lost when a US B-52 bomber crashed there in flames.

Sune: During the Cold War, the US secretly stored nuclear weapons in Greenland in violation of Denmark's, zero tolerance of nukes on any part of its territory. The Danish and Greenlandic public only found out in 1968 when a US B-52 bomber carrying four nuclear weapons crashed near an American base in Greenland, causing a massive explosion and radioactive contamination. Trump says that Greenland is important now for his plans to implement a golden dome missile defense system and that owning it is essential for maintaining security in the Arctic.

Pipaluk: Expand territory and drill, baby, drill.

To better understand what an expanded US military presence in Greenland might look like, I'm going to travel across 450 miles to one of their former military bases, Bluie East Two, which was originally built in 1942. First we'll fly over the rocky coastline to Kulusuk. A small village in the isolated eastern part of Greenland. Down there on the frozen landscape are what's believed to be some of the world's largest reserves of critical minerals and metals. And that could be another reason why President Trump wants to control Greenland. So far, very few investors have been willing to pay what it takes to extract minerals at scale in this island. So we've now arrived in Kulusuk in eastern Greenland. From here, still about a day and a half journey to get to the base. About 200 people live in this village where they mostly live off fishing and hunting. Once we leave Kulusuk tomorrow, it'll just be us and the wilderness with no shelter. So we spend the rest of the day preparing. We're packing up all our sleeping bags and sleeping mats and food for the trip. We're gonna be sleeping on tents on the ice. We have enough food to last us through today and tomorrow. These dogs are pretty pumped now they're ready to take us across the ice towards a boat. Then they'll with me, with us on the boat and then sail across to the other side and it'll take us the the last bit of the journey to the base. In the summer when it's ice free, you can get all the way to the base by boat, but since it's partly frozen over this time of year, the only way is by dog sled. Greenland is more than three times the size of Texas. It makes up 98% of Denmark's territory, but only about 1% of its population. If the Americans want to build more bases in Greenland, again, these are the kinds of conditions they will have to be prepared to deal with. The sun is out, but make no mistake, these are arctic temperatures around five degrees Fahrenheit or minus 15 Celsius. Plus the wind is blowing straight in my face. Here, this is the edge of the ice. And from here we'll get on this boat. He says that he can fit two dog sleds, five people and all 16 dogs on this little fishing boat. We're going across to the other side, yeah? For most of the trip, this small fishing boat made out of fiberglass crunches through two or three inches of ice. We're traveling with Justus Utuaq, a seal hunter who in the summer has a side hustle as a guide with a local tour agency. Going north to the next edge of the ice where we'll then get the sleds off and then dogs tell them to go to the base. Every inch of this boat is claimed, by us, the dogs, fuel canisters, sleds and survival equipment, all again necessary for us to undertake the next leg of the journey. It took us about three hours on the boat from Kulusuk and into this side here. The sun will set pretty soon as well. It's gotten dark now. The base is pretty close in behind me here, so hopefully we'll reach it early in the morning. But given that it's completely dark, we're gonna have to take a bit of a rest now. We've just woken up and it was pitch black last night when we arrived. So I didn't even realize that we had kept right next to an old crane that the Americans built and left behind. So this is very much the beginning of the base and I'm gonna go see what else we can find. This base here, Bluie East Two or BE Two. It was abandoned in 1947 after second World War and during the war it served as sort of a midway station between North America and Europe. The US also kept these bases here in Greenland as a safety against Nazi Germany 'cause they wanted to ensure that Nazi Germany didn't occupy Greenland and that was an interest, of course, they shared with Denmark. Well look at all these rusty old barrels. The locals apparently call them American flowers after they were left behind. They definitely have like an an eerie industrial beauty to them. They upshot was that they also cause a chemical spill when they were left behind and they was left up to Denmark to clean it up. If you want to build anything out here in an isolated places like this, you need to build a port and you need to have access to the sea. If you really want to do it, it can be done. It's just logistically challenging and it's probably gonna be quite expensive. Greenland is one of the most beautiful places on earth, but the conditions here are also inhospitable. And even the American military with all is power would find this environment difficult to operate in. But the bigger question I'm left with is the US is already allowed to operate military bases here and it could reopen places like Bluie East Two tomorrow. So why does President Trump insist that the US needs to own Greenland?
