Inside Iran’s Deadly Crackdown: Four Protesters Tell Their Story

Speaker: It turned very quickly. All we heard was gunshots. That was when we actually realized, we were in the war zone. The more people we kill, the less we have tomorrow on the streets.

Speaker: As soon as the first protest broke out in Tehran, we all knew there's something big started. Residents of Isfahan are famously known for being conservative. This was something new.

Speaker: I heard that they're striking against the government. I said, "Okay, that's good. If everyone comes together, they'll accept what I've been asking for."

We know how they really react to this kind of protest, but this time, when we saw Trump's tweet, "If they kill someone, the US will get involved," and people were talking about like, they cannot kill people this time.

Speaker: I didn't expect what has happened later. January 8th, I remember that was a Thursday. The son of the former Shah of Iran asked the people to come to the street exactly eight o'clock in the evening.

Speaker: It was about 7:30 PM I went out. I've never seen that much people in the street.

Speaker: We're just young people, old people, men, women.

Speaker: We went out with our family to our mall, which is so close to Tahran. Even my mother, she said, "Hey, I'm coming with you as well." That was the first time she came out with us.

Speaker: By 8:30, the crowd was big enough to be in thousands. I noticed an older lady in, I would say in her 70s, chanting "Death to the dictator." I spoke to her, I said, "I admire you for coming out and being fearless." She replied by saying, "They've taken everything. All I have is this life. They may as well take that."

At half past eight o'clock, I was checking my Instagram. I said, "I don't have any internet."

Speaker: They cut all communication all together.

Speaker: Around about 9:00, 9:15, something changed. The security guards, they have started to shot in the air. So, warn shots, actually,

Speaker: They started shooting tear gas, like three or four every five minutes. I couldn't breathe.

Speaker: Suddenly, the security guards were really shooting people down. They were not shooting in the air anymore. They were really targeting the people.

Speaker: They're shooting, just shooting so blind. At first it was shotgun. I mean, it's, pah! It's like that. And then the Kalashnikov. The noise is so different and da, da, da, da.

Speaker: For about 30 minutes, all we heard was gunshots, nonstop. In a square where you go for a walk on a weekend morning, that was like, you know, when we actually realized we are in a war zone. Friday morning, there's no internet. The country's in almost complete shutdown. We felt like it's necessary for us to go out.

Speaker: People have been reporting about mounted machine guns, so-called "Dushka" on the transporters, and I saw one of them myself, yes.

Speaker: The Dushka gunshots were so big, that they lit up the sky.

Speaker: The heavy gun is like dah, dah, dah, dah, because the bullets are huge.

Speaker: Once they shot a few round of fire, no wondered chanting any slogans anymore. So this is a bullet that someone I know found on the street. Can you imagine the bullet that left this casing when it hit a person, what can it do?

Speaker: On Saturday, we've been receiving SMSs on our phones. This is coming from a ministry of intelligence, and saying, "There are terrorists on the street. Therefore, we encourage families to discourage their young ones from taking part in such rallies.

It was like a threat letter on everyone's phone that either you stay home or there's a possibility that you get killed.

Speaker: The landlines and then phone calls started working and what we've done immediately was calling each other, I mean, I called some of my friends. They were all talking about a massacre in their place, but I understood it, is nobody realizing that it was the whole city. Everybody thought "It was just in my street. It was just in my place. Something special has happened around me" which was not a case. That was everywhere.

Speaker: Behesht-e Zahra, the main cemetery, in general, Behesht means paradise, but on that day, it was hell.

Speaker: I saw so many people there, they could go find their family and beloved once there.

Speaker: My brother's wife, her best friend is shot. It took like two hours to find her. We had a letter from the hospital and it was mentioned there that the body is in warehouse number B. They threw the bodies from here backside to here. In one warehouse, I assume, like 2,000 people, wwo layers of bodies in black body bags. They were unloading more and more bodies there. And still I can hear the mother's voice, who she were laying on her boy's body. And yeah.

I cannot ever go back to Iran because as soon as I arrive at the airport, they're certainly going to arrest me for speaking up against the regime, but I couldn't remain silent, you know, after everything I've seen with my own eyes.

Speaker: I wish I could do this with my own voice, with showing my own, but unfortunately, Iran is not safe for a man revealing the truth of the crimes against humanity in Iran.
