When Going Forward Is Running Backward

Aaron: Sometimes it's hard to go against the grain and do something that other people don't do. I think that gives me a great advantage because I'm willing to do those things that are painful and I like going against the grain.

I'm Aaron Yoder, I'm 32 years old and I'm the world record holder in the backwards mile run.

Speaker: How the pain changes you is up to you.

Aaron: A few years ago I was a middle distance runner with the pursuits of Olympic trials and running under four minutes in the mile and falling well short of that and that was really frustrating,

Speaker: But I'm not a whiner, I'm a warrior.

I had a knee injury and the doctors said that I shouldn't run anymore or that I would ever be able to run normal again. I just thought, "I'm gonna prove this doctor wrong," and that opened the door for backwards running. It doesn't bother me that anybody would think it's silly or if kids laugh at it because it's how I exercise and it's what I enjoy doing and it works for me.

When students come here and they see it for the first time, they're like, "Wow, he is actually running backwards. Like seriously, is he really doing that?"

Aaron: I haven't had any student athletes take up backwards running full time.

I mean, my sport is track, so there's no backwards running events, it's all forwards. For me, there's no purpose for running it full-time backwards except for just do it for fun, you know, once in a while.

Set go.

It's a lot harder to run backwards, to retro run, because you can't see where you're going, number one, and number two, you're not using the primary muscles, you're using smaller muscles to propel you forward. You have to rely so much more on your lower back and in your abdominal muscles because you need to be so stable when you're running and if you have a stronger core, that will translate to you being a faster forward athlete, jumping higher, and actually being a lot less injury prone. It actually burns more calories because you're using so many more muscles just to balance yourself. Whereas you could be a little more stable and a little bit more aware if you're running forward. How do you see? You don't. You have to rely on what you're feeling on the ground. I've fallen down a couple times and the surprising part about it is that you're so aware of what's going on, so your reaction time is so much faster, which is great for the brain and really doesn't hurt that bad. I was training for two months exclusively for backwards running and attempted to break the record and did. Sometimes in life, going forward is going backwards and I knew that I always had big things on my horizon and knew I could be the best in the world. It's just discovering what I was actually good at.
