Artemis II Is Very Good News 

Three, two, one. Booster ignition, and lift off. The crew of Artemis II now bound for the Moon.

And just like that, we're headed back to the Moon. NASA, this week, successfully launched four astronauts into space on a 10-day mission that will include a lunar fly-by. The goal? To eventually put a man back on the Moon. It's been five decades since NASA last pulled that off. The famous Apollo program retired in 1972 after putting a total of 12 astronauts on lunar soil. NASA hopes this current mission will help them do it again in 2028. And we're back with our panel. Kyle, what does NASA wanna accomplish with this mission?

Sure, it wants to test some of these systems and set the Artemis program up for the next mission in 2027 when they're gonna do rendezvous and docking maneuvers. And then 2028, put human boots, American boots, back on the Moon, and then who knows? Start building a Moon base, set up some systems and supply routes maybe that we can get to Mars and beyond, pushing the bounds of human exploration.

Paul: What's the benefit of going back to the Moon?

Well, I think it's a couple things, and space is obviously strategic in, you know, the era that we live in. I think that's part of it. I think also it's pushing science, pushing exploration, and putting America in the history books. I mean, it's easy to forget how brief the Apollo program was. There were six missions over three years, where there were 12 pairs of boots that were landed on the Moon. And then the United States got distracted, Vietnam, Watergate, all the rest. I think it's personally thrilling to watch this again. I can't wait to see the next lander touchdown.

Well, Dan, you and I actually were alive, unlike this guy, when the Moon landing in 1969. I guess the question so many people will ask is, "Why should we spend money on this program?" I mean, you know, we have so many other things, a big defense increase we need, and so many other things that are priorities.

That's probably true. On the other hand, we can't think about this Artemis mission, I don't think, just in isolation. Back in 1968-69, when the Apollo program was up and running, we did have a competitor: the Soviet Union. Remember the Soviet cosmonauts? They were up there. The press now is full of reports about how China intends to beat us to a landing on the Moon. No doubt using tech and engineering stolen from the United States. But that is the reality. We're back into a competition with them. And China no doubt is going up there to militarize space, and the United States has to fall back on its resources to try to compete in this competition. I'll make one quick point about the entrepreneurialism and innovation in this country. Consider that the two other people involved in space and rocketry are Jeff Bezos, who got his start selling packages and distributing them, and Elon Musk who got his start selling electric vehicles. They're both very seriously and legitimately in the space and rocket business. Only in the United States do you find that kind of innovation, and I think it's worth promoting that.

Well, Kim, I wanna ask about that, because SpaceX, the Elon Musk company, has suggested it is going to go public as a company, and its valuation could be well over a trillion dollars, maybe as much as a trillion and a half. So the question, I guess, is, "Why don't we let space exploration up to private explorers? Why does NASA have to do it?"

Well, I think this is just a really valuable point. I mean, Dan and Kyle laid out strategic and other reasons why we are doing this, but let's not forget that an enormous amount of this has just been launched by the private enthusiasm of some of these billionaires who have also, in the process, they have revolutionized the way that we launch rockets, really made some huge advances, and dramatically brought down the cost and the way that we go about doing it. And that is now playing a role in the way NASA looks at this. This particular mission is being done on the old model where NASA designed the space launch, but then they had it done by contractors. But note that SpaceX is gonna be involved in future iterations, especially trying to get the humans down to the Moon when we get to that phase. And I think we're just gonna see a whole new level and type of cooperation between private and public sector. We don't know exactly how that's gonna evolve yet, but it's been really neat to see the private sector, in this case, spurring the United States government to do better and do more.

Kyle, briefly, does it really matter if China beats us back to the Moon?

Yeah, I think it does. I mean, there's a natural pride, soft power element to it. But also, who knows what uses a Moon base could have? I mean, now we have GPS, we have satellites. All that stuff is routine, but it was not routine when NASA was pushing the boundaries in the fifties and the sixties, and that could happen again.

And it could be a base for a launch to Mars and beyond, because certain advantages of doing that from, you don't have to escape Earth orbit to do it. So that would be a benefit.

Yes, and on the point about the budget, NASA's budget is a fraction of the fraud in the federal budget.
