WSJ Opinion: Far-Left Fallout After Francesca Hong's Primary Loss

Welcome to The Journal Editorial Report. I'm Gerry Baker, in for Paul Gigot. Establishment Democrats walked away with a win in Wisconsin this week. Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong narrowly lost her primary race for the chance to be the state's next governor. She failed to get support from some of the nation's most prominent progressives, like Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Francesca Hong faced a late wave of criticism for her prior calls to defund the police, eliminate ICE, and yes, even cancel Thanksgiving. Democrat David Crowley secured the nomination with a last-minute boost from Wisconsin's outgoing governor, Tony Evers. But was Hong's loss a one-off fluke for the far left? Or is the tide turning as Democrats try and avoid potentially disastrous midterms? Well, let's bring in our panel, Wall Street Journal columnist Kim Strassel and Allysia Finley, and editorial board member Kyle Peterson. Allysia, let me start with you.

So, was this result in Wisconsin? Was this, did this represent the peak of Democratic Socialism? Has the tide turned? Or is it just down to the particularities of one really quite bad candidate?

Well, I think there are positive signs here. You did see Democrats, in particular the Democratic establishment, consolidate and rally around David Crowley, who really came from behind. And he did particularly well among Black communities, as well as working-class people, and in the suburbs. Where she did very well was, on the other hand, among college grads in these college-educated areas of, for instance, in Milwaukee, as well as Madison. So, you really did see a tension within the Democratic Party. However, the energy still is with the left. You saw that in other primaries this week, for instance, in Minnesota, where you saw the lieutenant governor who was kind of tied to the Medicaid fraud there. She won her primary. So, there still is a lot of progressive energy driving the Democratic Party.

Yeah, Kyle, for someone, for a candidate who thinks that Thanksgiving causes a lot of pain, and has these extreme positions, Francesca Hong still did remarkably well in a purple state, with a very big turnout.

Yes, and especially given the real scope of her socialist vision, talking about having a state public option for healthcare to compete against insurers, having a state bank to give loans to small businesses at lower rates. It's a real sweeping vision of government control, intrusion, I think, into private life. And it was a close-run thing. I mean, the idea that more than 300,000 Midwestern Wisconsin Democratic voters would go for a candidate like that would have been an astonishing political turn even fairly recently. And so I don't see this as a high-water mark at all. I mean, the polling miss, I think, is significant. The fact that Hong was up in all of these polls and then fell short in the end, it does make you wonder about some of the general election polls. Troy Jackson, the Medicare for All Senate candidate in Maine, is he really ahead of Susan Collins, as the polls suggest? But it may take some actual general election losses, perhaps, for the Democratic Party to get the sense that maybe the center of the electorate is not with these far-left progressive candidates.

Kim, Democrats, some Democrats at least, do seem to be disavowing some of the positions that they've taken in the past. Francesca Hong did so. Abdul El-Sayed was backing off some of the things he's said in the past. And we've also had this week this fascinating spectacle of AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, saying that, oh, the woke thing, you know, woke 1, woke 1.0, or whatever she... It was called, "Wow, that was crazy." You wrote about this in the column. Do you find this conversion by these Democrats away from the sort of woke politics of just the recent past? Do you find it convincing?

Well, no. But why is it happening, right? I mean, if you look at those candidates you just mentioned, El-Sayed, for instance, AOC, Francesca Hong, all of those, what's notable is they were running or they're interested in running on a bigger field, either in a statewide election or AOC may have presidential ambitions. And that is an acknowledgment that some of this stuff doesn't fly. And so they are modulating what they say to try to pretend that it didn't happen or it wasn't that bad or it was just a crazy moment. All right? And I think that's what happened to Francesca Hong. If you look at where all the progressives have done very well, it's in these DSA candidates. It's been in very bright blue districts. Suddenly, this was all that philosophy meeting reality in a more, a slightly more rational state like Wisconsin, even the Democratic primary electorate. What concerns me, though, Gerry, and why I think this is not ending, is that there are many bright blue districts, and they now have a strategy here, which is you go into them, you beat the sitting establishment incumbent character, and then you are guaranteed to win that seat because of the makeup of the electorate. There's, you know, more than 100 districts like that, at least in the House, across the country. And so I don't think we're seeing DSA go away anytime soon.

Allysia, just very briefly, the other story really out of that result in Wisconsin, as with Michigan last week, was just how wrong the opinion polls were, massively overstating Francesca Hong's estimated support, as they did with El-Sayed, although, of course, he won, she lost. Is this a... What's going on here? Are these pollsters just making this error? Are they somehow... Are they not finding moderate voters, establishment voters out there? How do you interpret just how badly wrong these polls have been?

Well, I think one of the reasons was that Crowley had dropped out before and had gotten back in, and then you had Mandela Barnes, who had been the second lead. He dropped out, so there was a little bit of disruption because of that. But I think the other reason is because they probably aren't sampling enough working-class people who are more moderate and are really the base of the Democratic Party. They're probably oversampling these progressive over... College-educated, yes, over-educated people.
