JD Vance goes to Budapest

I admire what you are fighting for; you're fighting for your freedom, you're fighting for your sovereignty, and I'm here because President Trump and I wish for your success, and we are fighting right here with you. We stand for sovereignty, we stand for Hungary, and we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the man who has done more to defend those values than anyone else, Viktor Orban.

An unusual campaign stop for Vice President JD Vance, who traveled to Budapest this week to rally support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban ahead of tomorrow's pivotal election there. A favorite of many on the MAGA right, Orban is facing a tough reelection bid as of flagging economy and accusations of corruption threatened to end his 16 year hold on power. We are back with Kim Strassel and Jason Riley, and we're also joined from London by Editorial Board Member, Jillian Melchior, who's been covering the Hungarian election for us. So, Jillian, I guess Viktor Orban wanted the help from JD Vance, is it gonna make a difference in his campaign?

That's the question. So this is, if you look at the polls, and polls in Hungary are notoriously unreliable, they suggest that the opposition is quite a bit ahead, that this is going to be a tough race for Viktor Orban to win. And the other interesting dynamic here is Orban is going to need independent voters, but Trump is not as popular with independent voters in Hungary as he is with his base. And so, pulling those statistics, it's possible that JD Vance's trip out there may actually isolate some of those independent voters away from Orban. Look, this is a election that I think has some lessons for Republicans, and part of that is that Orban's economic strategy has been about subsidies for select segments of the electorate, it's also been a lot about state support for favored industries, and that has not delivered high growth. Hungary's running through pretty tough inflation, the economy is not in strong shape, and I think voters are potentially going to penalize him for that.

All right, interesting, Jillian. So, Kim, obviously, JD Vance and his team understood that about the nature of the race. So why did the Vice President put his prestige on the line to try to help Orban?

Well, I think it's to help Orban, but I think it's to help JD Vance himself. And here's why, Paul, you know, there is this section of the MAGA right, that has become obsessed with Hungary and that, you know, they believe that Europe is ripe for this conservative cultural revolution, and that Hungary and Orban are the tip of the spear for that. They enjoy watching the fights Orban has with the EU bureaucrats, you know, they like the idea that his party is sort of like their vision of a MAGA party, somewhat of anti-immigrant, a little bit isolationist, anti-woke, and to the extent that, you know, Tucker Carlson and the likes idolize Orban. I think that JD Vance going over there maybe would help with the election, but it's also his own coalition management. It's his way of sort of, you know, keeping peace with all those folks that have a real interest in Orban and hold him on a pedestal.

So 2028, Jason, that's what this is about, It's about keeping JD Vance that close, interlinked with Tucker Carlson, right?

And he's done this before. JD Vance, last year, went to the Munich Conference and spoke sympathetically in favor of a far right party over there, the AfD in Germany, that subsequently lost the election, Paul, and lost it to Friedrich Merz, who was a much stronger ally of the US.

Paul: And center-right candidate.

A center-right candidate who was a stronger ally of the US. And I often wonder if some of these people that JD Vance is cozying up to what their allegiance to the US is, including Orban, who's got ties to Russia. So I think Kim is right. This is a lot about JD Vance's own presidential prospects here in the US, and knowing that he has a base, a part of MAGA, that has sort of turned Orban into a cult figure and wanting to show that he's in good graces with Orban in order to appeal to those folks.

And he seems to believe, JD Vance, to be fair to him, that Orban represents the kind of conservative coalition that he wants to build here in the United States. So, Jillian, Orban, as Jason suggests, is also a favorite of Vladimir Putin who wants Orban to win. So that puts the Vice President and the President here in a position the same as Putin. Why does Putin want Orban to win?

Well, Orban carries a lot of Putin's water within the European Union. And I'll point out one example of that; you know, the Trump administration has been saying that Europe needs to step up more for Ukraine to do more of the heavy lifting on support for them. And in December, Europe came to an agreement that it was going to provide about a $90 billion Euro loan. And that was going to help Ukraine not only continue to run its government, but its military, it's for weapons purchases. And Viktor Orban is now blocking that loan. And so, I think that's something that Vladimir Putin is certainly very happy about. But what it doesn't do is advance Trump's personal objective, which is to reach a peace in Ukraine. And that's because Russia will believe that it can continue fighting, and that Ukraine is in a weakened position.

Well, is the alternative, the opposition leader, less pro-Russia, Jillian?

He's been keeping his cards pretty close to the chest on this. He said things like he won't send Hungary as part of the coalition of the willing, but there's reason to believe that he'd be less confrontational and less oppositional with the European Union, and that, you know, he might step out of the way, stop obstructing Europe's efforts to help Ukraine. And I think that's probably what the Hungarian electorate could get behind.
