Jill Biden Drags Democrats Back to 2024

Jill Biden's memoir officially hit bookstores Tuesday and Democrats are fuming as the former First Lady puts her husband's disastrous debate performance and aborted re-election bid back in the headlines at a time when the party is trying to move past it's 2024 losses and look ahead to the midterms and beyond. Making the media rounds this week, Mrs. Biden continued to defend the former president's ill-fated decision to run again.

Joe had to decide whether to run again, and in 2023, the Democratic Party was totally behind Joe and everywhere I went, "Joe's gotta do it again." "He's gotta run, he's gotta run." And he was like, "Well, I don't know, you know? Am I too old?" Then people were doing polling, you know, who could beat Trump? And the only person that who polled that said that could beat Trump was Joe Biden. I believe he would've beat Donald Trump in that election.

Well, we'll never get that test, Kyle, but is Joe Biden right? The Democrats wanted Joe to run again because they thought he was the only person who could defeat Trump.

No, I think that there were many Democrats who were very quietly and privately saying, "Please do not run again. We need to have an open primary. We need to have a real fight over the future of the party." But for sake of party loyalty and party discipline, they didn't wanna say that out loud. And it is kind of astounding, Joe Biden's greatest regret it seems, is that the whole coverup of his health didn't work. She says in these interviews that she did not see any sort of cognitive issues with Biden as president, though she acknowledges that he was declining and getting older. She says she was the essence of the same Joe Biden.

And the essence that's, it carries a lot of weight in that sentence.

Yes, and then she was asked whether, if she could do it all over again knowing what she knows now, whether she would've en encouraged him not to run for re-election. And she said basically that she would, because being, you know, pushed out on an ice flow by his party in the end was so personally and emotionally hurtful to Joe Biden. I mean, there are a lot of reports that Democrats are furious about this book and about the Joe Biden book tour, and it is not hard to understand why.

Yeah, but I wanna ask, I agree with Kyle on that, but I also wonder, you know, Democrats, Jason, they really covered up for Joe Biden and now they're saying, oh my God, you're coming back here in the midterms, please go away again. But they brought this on themselves in many ways, did they not?

And she led the way. I mean, I really do think that a lot of these Democrats were deferring to Joe Biden on this. She was closest to him. And the idea that she was shocked at what happened in that debate performance, I don't think many Americans buy that, but that's what she's claiming. I don't think she has any regrets, Paul, except getting caught, trying to hide his infirmities from the American public. And that's what she regrets. And I think that this book is really an effort to sort of try and clear her name, but I don't think it's gonna be particularly successful. And I don't think history is going to be kind to this inner circle of people that tried to prop up Joe Biden for a second term.

You know, Kim, we had Democrat after Democrat, trips to our office telling us, "Oh, Joe's, he's good. He's strong. You know, I don't see any, anything wrong with him." Even as his, the public was showing, you know, geez, we think there's something not totally there for another four years. The one person who dissented from that Dean Phillips, the former Minnesota Congressman, who ultimately ran against Joe Biden and predicted exactly what would happen, but he was a prophet without a party.

Well, you know, look this whole book, Paul, I just find it, this extraordinary testament to the self-deception that Democrats perpetrated on themselves all through 2023 and 2024. And that doesn't just go to Joe Biden's health, it goes to the broader policy questions that were so unpopular. If you read this book, there's a lot of Joe Biden saying, "We were told." "We were read." "We read." And that was the press out there saying, everything is great. Yeah, the border's open, inflation is terrible, you know, et cetera. But Joe Biden's the best. We're not gonna write about his health. We're not gonna write about any of the policy failures out there. Democrats really believe that. I mean, let's not forget, can you remember the sort of the praise and the love that greeted Kamala Harris taking over the party? She was gonna cruise to victory. There was no sense out there that there was a problem. And what we know now from this book is that that went all the way up to the White House. And if you're Jill Biden, and you think that the entire country is ticking along smoothly, why not roll out your degenerating husband for another four years? Because in your mind, everything's gonna be okay.

Kyle, in retrospect, would the Democratic Party have been better off if they'd had an open competition for the nomination after Joe Biden dropped out?

Absolutely. I think they would've been better off. It would've been, all of the eyes of the country would've been riveted if they had done it at the Democratic Convention with delegates, you know, making side deals and trying to get their person over the finish line. It would've been a real political drama of the stuff that political junkies love. And who knows, maybe Kamala Harris would've won that, and then it would've been a stronger now...
