Texas Senate Showdown

The 2026 primary election season officially kicks off next week as voters in Texas head to the polls Tuesday in a pair of contests that could determine control of the US Senate. Polls show a tight race on both sides as Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett and State representative James Talarico battled to become the Democratic nominee, and incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn tries to fend off a challenge from Attorney General Ken Paxton and Congressman Wesley Hunt in a contest that could go to a runoff in May. We are back with our panel. So Kim, talk first about this Democratic primary. What are the differences between these two candidates?

Well, one thing, Paul, is both of them are progressive, so this is more a matter of style. James Talarico fascinating and a lot of people would like to see him in the Democratic leadership, would like to see him elected. He's young, dynamic. Interestingly though he's a a Presbyterian seminarian, who speaks very openly about his faith. They think these democratic leaders, that that is something that could make him a little bit more of an unusual and powerful candidate in Texas, where a lot of independents and moderate Republicans have disliked democratic attacks on religion. This is a very different kind of candidate, but he is up against Jasmine Crockett, who is a kind of progressive superstar. She's a much more in your face, smash mouth candidate known for going after Republicans. That's the kind of thing the progressive base eats up. These are the folks that are more likely to come out and vote too in the primary. So you're gonna get a progressive candidate either way. It's a question of style and which one is going to really be better positioned against the ultimate Republican candidate.

Well, Alicia, who do you think would be the stronger Democrat against Republican, Crockett or Talarico?

I think Talarico, for all the reasons Kim spelled out, especially if in the Republican race that it turns out that Ken Paxton, the Attorney General, currently ends up winning the primary. Now Talarico, as Ken mentioned, is a progressive. He has supported packing the Supreme Court raising taxes on so-called billionaires, public option healthcare. But he's able to present these ideas as kind of centrist, modern in a kind of a tone that appeals to independents, which are really the people, who are Republicans are really struggling with in Texas. In fact, president Trump is underwater among independents in Texas.

Alright, yeah, that's an interesting point. So let's turn to the Republican side, Kyle, you've got John Cornyn, the four term Senator going for his fifth, 74 years old. Popular, certainly conservative record. I mean, so why is he being challenged by Paxton?

I think it's a mirror image of what's happening on the democratic side of the aisle. Cornyn is a very conservative senator. Nobody's idea of a squish, but Paxton again, is somebody who is very good at being loud and presenting himself as somebody who fights and getting headlines, taking up some of the populist causes, echoing some of the populist rhetoric from the Trump administration, like the Make America Healthy again campaign from RFK Junior. But I think it goes in some strange direction. So he's gone after toothpaste manufacturers, for example, saying that there's fluoride risks to Texas children. He's gone after serial manufacturers for use of artificial dyes, as if it's some mystery to people that fruit loops contain food dye or Skittles is another one that he's taken up as if anybody doesn't realize that Skittles uses dyes.

And he's in bed with the trial lawyers that are his partners in government.

Right, it's kind of almost an anti-business, big business campaign as if these food companies are, you know, not trying to sell good food that people wanna buy, you know, they're secretly poisoning America's children is the kind of rhetoric that he's using, which is, you know, is popular in some corners of the right.

So yeah Kim, the issues that Paxton is using against Cornyn, I guess there was a compromise on gun laws, sort of red flag laws at one point, and he's trying to run against Cornyn as weak on immigration, but I don't know that Cornyn has that record. What do you think about those attacks?

Well, look, this is the mirror image of what's happening in the Democratic primary. He knows that the folks who are gonna be turning out are much more likely to be those kind of mega activists. And so he's trying to suggest that Cornyn is establishment old guard, not with Donald Trump. The record, Cornyn's record in no way reflects that whatsoever. And this is a, again, a big choice. If you talk to Republican leaders, everyone understands Cornyn is the stronger candidate to come out of this. He has pretty good rapport with the independents in the states. He's an incumbent. You can never underestimate the powers of an incumbent running again. Whereas Paxton, so he get in, he's got a lot of baggage both ethically and from a personal perspective, and I think he would be at risk against either a Crockett or a Talarico candidacy.

So it could really put the Republican majority in the Senate at risk this year. Alright.

They want Texas.

Yeah, they want Texas. They think they can win it with Paxton on the Senate side, on the Republican side.
