The Democrats Just Say No to Iran

They don't seem to know what they're doing or why they did this. I think this is not going well for them.

The administration seems to be making it up as it goes along. They are heading down the path of a American sons and daughters being in the line of fire in Iran.

This is already a disaster of epic proportions, and I'm just going to tell you it is likely to get worse.

Democrats in Congress are already predicting American defeat in Iran, with lawmakers rushing this week to condemn President Trump's decision to launch strikes and pushing ahead with votes in the House and Senate to halt military action. Both resolutions failed largely along party lines. We are back with Dan Henninger, Kate Odell, and Wall Street Journal Editorial Board member, Kyle Peterson. So, it's striking these comments by the Democrats, Kyle. But they looking at the polls and they're seeing, I think, that this war isn't popular at the start. Why isn't it? Usually, there's a rally around the flag effect.

Well, some of it, I think, has to do with the fact that Trump campaigned against forever wars. So there's some confusion, I think, among some parts of his base about what we're exactly doing here. But I would urge Democrats to read a little bit deeper into those polls. So, a Fox News poll, this week for example, 61% of Americans say that Iran is a true national security threat to the United States. And then read down even further, the question is, "Do you think Trump's strikes on the Iranian nuclear program last year were a success?" About 30% say yes, 30% say no, but the most popular option, 37%, is "too soon to say." So, I think President Trump has some runway with the public here, and they want to see if he can land this plane and get an outcome that is favorable.

Well, on that point, Dan, do you think the president needs to do a better job of explaining himself? And how do you read the calculation by the Democrats? What are they thinking here?

Well, the Democrats, I think, are assuming that, with the help of the media, they can disavow what they call "Trump's war" and gain political ground against Trump. I mean, this is the usual thing that they...

But I hate to say, it's not... I mean, Trump is a commander in chief, but it's America's war now.

And that is exactly, I think, what the President needs to explain to the American people. Let's understand that Iran is not our only adversary. Iran is in an explicit alliance with Russia, China, and North Korea. North Korea, in fact, has built the underground tunnels where Iran is hiding its missiles. Russia has supplied them with weapons. And this war is taking out one of those adversaries that are aligned against the United States. It's a big deal. It could be a historic achievement if it works. And it's an extraordinary act of US leadership. And I think, at some point, President Trump is going to have to sit down in the Oval Office and explain that to the American people, because I think they would be amenable to a rational explanation of why he has undertaken this extraordinary event.

Okay, let's talk about the opposition here to the war on the political right, that is, the podcaster networks and online conservatives, so-called conservatives, who don't like the war, they've been supporters of the president. How extensive is that opposition among Republicans and conservatives?

I mean, it's loud, but I wouldn't say it's extensive. And I think, you know, underscoring what Dan and Kyle said, I think the American public is actually quite open to hearing the case for these strikes. And I would say, I think actually the administration has made a pretty clear case about the objectives, including, you know, to take out a ballistic missile program that could be used as a blackmail shield for a nuclear ambition. And so I think, you know, to the extent there is opposition among this on the podcast right and that it gets a lot of listening, I think the president's best response to it is to continue to send the English language into battle on his behalf and try to persuade the public here that he has objectives here and that it's worth sticking to until they're achieved.

And I think if you look at the polling, Kyle, there's one poll that came out, the Vandenberg Group, and it showed most of the MAGA right is solidly behind the president, at least at this stage, which suggests to me that ultimately the test of this will be, does the president reach his aims? Is it a success or not? And then, you know, if it is a success, then he'll get credit for it.

Right. And I think that that breakdown on the right is mirrored in Congress where there are a couple of noisy gadflies who are criticizing President Trump for what he's doing. But the broad swath of the Republican conference, including, you know, Reaganite Republican members who know the Iran problem and have been talking about it for a long time are behind this action so far.

Just briefly, Dan. Do you think that the Democrats figure, "Look, we can just rail against this and if it turns out badly, we'll get the benefit, and if it turns out well, everybody will forget what we said."

I think the Democrats are making a miscalculation here. You know, they have had a problem since Vietnam, it's called the Vietnam Syndrome. They got the reputation for opposing all military action, all military spending. And the public may conclude that Democrats cannot be trusted to be in control in a dangerous world. And that's what we're living in right now.

So they may end up paying a price for this politically, assuming America wins here.
