The Democrats' Turn Toward Antisemitism

As history has taught us, antisemitic tropes and stereotypes, some of which I heard personally on this campaign, will ultimately be the undoing of our democracy if we all don't lean in and speak out. Even if it's not politically expedient.

That was Democratic Congressman Dan Goldman with a stark warning about the rise of antisemitism in America and in his party after his loss in Tuesday's New York primary. Goldman, who is Jewish, was banned from a Brooklyn coffee shop this week over his support for Israel with a now deleted social media post calling him a genocide enabler. Let's bring in longtime "Wall Street Journal" editor and columnist, Dan Henninger, and Editorial Board Members, Kyle Peterson and Elliot Kaufman. Elliot is the author of the forthcoming book, "In the War Room: The Inside Story of Israel's Fight Against Hamas and the Iranian Axis." So Elliot, Dan Goldman did not speak those words during the campaign, but only after, and you wonder why. But is he right?

Well, I feel bad for Dan Goldman, because for a liberal, he did everything right. He personally impeached President Trump. He criticized the Netanyahu government, West Bank settlements, the war in Gaza, but he wouldn't go all the way. He wouldn't lie and call it genocide. He wouldn't throw the half of the world's Jews who live in Israel under the bus. And Mamdani found another Jewish candidate, Brad Lander, who would do all those things.

So Dan, there's a real evidence in your mind that there is this growing antisemitism. It's not just anti-Israel, it's actually antisemitic.

Yes, it is, there's no question about it. It's extraordinarily disturbing. It is occurring mainly among younger Democrats, liberals, progressives. And you know, Paul, I think this is a broader problem. It's basically born of, it certainly is born of antipathy, but it's also born of ignorance. These are people who don't know anything about the history of the Jews before World War II or during World War II. It is just kind of a vague screen to them. And so, they regard what's going on now as simply something between a country in the Middle East and their favored group, the Palestinians. This ignorance is always dangerous. It has always been historically dangerous, but it has allowed this group to rise to power, at least in cities like New York. And I think it is incumbent on everything, everyone, as Dan Goldman suggested after losing, to speak out now and to speak out forthrightly.

Where is this coming from, Kyle? Dan says it's younger people, younger voters in New York City in particular, but also in LA and Washington DC and elsewhere. Is this in part a function of social media, which is how Mamdani communicates or is it the universities or both?

Yeah, I mean both. I think the universities is part of it. I think social media is part of it, these internet echo chambers. But to the point about mainstream figures and politicians, some of them decide that it's in their political interest to pander to those kinds of sentiments. I mean, this, the famous quote from Zohran Mamdani, I think in 2023. You know, when the boot of the New York Police Department is on your neck, it has been laced by the Israel Defense Forces. What is that even supposed to mean? Other than, I know you don't like Israel and I don't like Israel either. So, you know, cheer for me and vote for me. And you know, we can start a movement together. And I agree with Dan. I think it is incumbent on figures in both parties, mainstream figures to push back against that kind of nonsense before it grows any larger. And it is a significant share, I think, in the Democratic party. I mean, 100,000 votes in Michigan in the 2024 Democratic primary for uncommitted instead of Joe Biden, particularly given Biden's support for Israel.

Elliot, the defenders here would say of Mamdani these people say, we're just anti-Israel. We're just against how they prosecuted this war. Is it fair to go further, to say, that's not right? They're actually actively pro Hamas, or is that going too far?

It sounds like it must be going too far and yet it isn't. Because right after Hamas' October 7th massacre, the New York DSA, Democratic Socialists of America, endorsed a pro Hamas rally for the very next day, held by communist groups and pro Hamas groups. Where the speakers there were exalting in the massacre saying, it's not terrorism. It's justified indeed by any means necessary, saying that on October 8th, 2023. They made this very clear. Chevalier, her group at Columbia published a tribute to Yahya Sinwar, Hamas' leader and mastermind of October 7th, holding him up as a model to which all of them should look of lifetime devotion to the intifada. They were very clear on those points.

We should add, running outta time here, but we should add that there is some antisemitism on the right as well, including in precincts like the podcast networks who, Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens who play footsy with Nick Fuentes and others.
