WSJ Opinion: The GOP's Search for a Socialist Attack Line

These people are dangerous and frankly, they're lunatics. They're crazy and we can't let them get into office. Communism is the greatest threat to our country. They want to skip socialism. They want to go right down to the bottom of the barrel. That's communism. They want it to be a communist country. We're not letting them have it as a communist country, not even for a minute.

That was President Trump Wednesday after Abdul El-Sayed's win in Michigan with a now familiar warning that the communists are coming. So will the president's red scare rhetoric resonate with midterm voters? Let's ask longtime Wall Street Journal editor and columnist Dan Henninger, columnist Kim Strassel, and editorial board member, Kyle Peterson. Dan, let me start with you. Is this a credible warning? Is it a plausible tactic that can work in these midterm elections, terrifying people that the country's about to fall over, fall to the communists?

I think it's credible. I think it's plausible. I don't think it's going to work. And I'll tell you why. Donald Trump 80 years old. He knows what communism is. He remembers the Cold War. He knows what the Iron Curtain was. Honestly, Jerry, I think most voters under 35, you say communism to them, they have no idea what you are talking about. I mean, the level of ignorance about issues like this, and that includes, I might say, antisemitism, the Holocaust. It's just a blank. And as Doug Schoen said on earlier, socialism as well. So I think that the Republicans, rather than trying the red scare, which has no meaning for younger voters have to go into specifics about what the socialists actually stand for. And in some cases are running away from defunding the police, defunding the Pentagon, free healthcare, kind of the UK national healthcare system, which is in so much trouble. They have to get into specifics and be willing to debate these socialists on their own terms.

Kyle, it's a good point, isn't it? That people, especially people of your generation don't, like Dan and my generation, don't remember really the Soviet Union or communism or whether it was in its heyday. But now you do see these polls that 40 plus percent of Americans have a favorable view of socialism. So is this gonna work to scare people into voting Republican?

I agree with Dan. I think I'm skeptical and I think there's a risk of overreaching, of over-egging the pudding. I mean, think about all the Democrats who labeled President Trump a fascist over the years. Well, it turns out that a majority of the country in the 2024 election didn't buy that. And I think that the, the issue here is that labels are less helpful than actual policy platforms and details about what these candidates are proposing. So Abdul El-Sayed has denied now in Michigan that he is a socialist, but he wants to socialize healthcare with the Medicare for all plan. Under the Bernie Sanders Bill, that means if you're in Michigan and you have some kind of private health plan through your insurance, through your employer, that plan would be illegal. And I think those kinds of specifics are much more helpful for Republicans making the case. And to their credit, I think Susan Collins in Maine, Mike Rogers in Michigan, some of these Senate candidates are more likely to do that than to follow Trump down the road of using the communist label.

Yeah and Kim it is true, isn't it, that they do seem to be sort of some of these socialists, you know, on the one hand sending a message to, you know, hard left supporters that they're with them. On the other hand saying, "No, no, no, you know, El-Sayed has said, "No, no, I'm a capitalist. I'm not a socialist." And yet if you look at the platform of the Democratic socialists within the Democratic Party, now, El-Sayed is not a member of the DSA, is not a member of the Democratic Socialists for America. But if you look at that platform, it's not just Medicare for all or higher taxes on the rich. It's open the prisons, open the borders, defund the police, defund the Pentagon. There's a lot of really hard, whatever you label it, there's a lot of really hardcore radical policies out there, aren't there?

Oh, well, that's just it. And by the way, El-Sayed might say that he's not a member of the DSA, but there are now nominees running in this election under the Democratic line on the ballot that are dues-paying members of the DSA. And the Democratic Party as a whole needs to be asked whether or not they're going to own the policies of DSA or disown the policies of DSA. And, you know, some of those things you mentioned, I read through the platform, Jerry, they call to completely eliminate the Pentagon. You know, no more defense for the country. Is this something Democrats want to own? No policemen and no penal system whatsoever. Do Democrats own that position? You know, they call for the seizure of private companies to be run by government an end to capitalism. Is this something Democrats want to own? Because Democrats have basically an infiltration right now of hardcore socialist communists in their party, and they need to be made to hold some accountability as to giving out that ballot line and whether or not these are positions that they stand behind or do something about their party.

Dan, just briefly though, does capitalism have an image problem? I mean, if socialism has an image problem, again, especially for those of us who remember it, a lot of people are very unhappy with the state of the country. They don't like what they see as inequality, the enormous inequalities. They're very unhappy with the dominance of certain industries, tech industry in particular. This does seem to be feeding some of this support for some of these left-wing policies.

It does to some extent. I don't think capitalism per se is the problem. I think most Americans understand that we live in an entrepreneurial economy, a free market economy. It is like just a question of how strong and successful it is for most people. In that case, we're talking about economic growth, creating more jobs. We had a weak jobs report this week. It's that sort of thing. Prices seem to be sticky. It's that sort of thing that upsets people rather than I think the structure. And it's gonna be an issue in the next, in those elections, the actual structure of the US economy, capitalism versus socialism.
