Trump's Mid-Term Election Strategy

If we lose the Midterms, you'll lose so many of the things that we're talking about, so many of the assets that we're talking about, so many of the tax cuts that we're talking about-

Won't happen.

And it would lead to very bad things. We gotta win the Midterms. I mean, I'm here because I love Iowa, but I'm here because we're starting the campaign to win the Midterms. We gotta win the Midterms. That means Senate and it means House.

That was President Trump in Iowa this week in the first of, what the White House says, will be regular appearances on the campaign trail ahead of the Midterm elections. The President repeatedly tied the stakes in November to his economic record, touting what he described as a dramatic turnaround in inflation, investment, and wage growth in his first year back in Office. But in a new FOX poll, only 20% of voters say they have been helped by his economic policies, with 43% saying they've been hurt, and 37% saying his policies have made little or no difference. We are back with our panel. So, Kim, you wrote a tough column this week saying that the President and the White House has led a lot of distraction, distracting issues, interfere with that message the President tried to deliver in Iowa. What are those distractions that he should avoid?

Well, the big ones, Paul, obviously are immigration; and, again, the administration already had a solid straight up win on that, huge voter approval for what they had done to secure the border. And it's clearly now not only gone into overreach to a degree that certain voters are now rejecting their overall immigration approach, but it is dominating the news. And the other one is the kind of endless day-to-day tariff threats which people can no longer even keep up with; I mean, you know, are we taxing or tariffing Canada today and South Korea tomorrow, and what's the state with China? I mean, this is no longer something that is making any appreciable difference in voters' minds, but it is all getting in the way of the administration laying out what good news accomplishments, clear, good news, accomplishments that they have made on the economy. It's also getting in the way, Paul, of Congress and the President having time to come up with a next step agenda for this spring that could add to those accomplishments.

All right. So, Dan, if you're the President sitting there and you wanna focus on the economy, what would you do? This week, it was these Trump accounts where a thousand dollars per child born after January 1st of last year through 2028, every child's gonna get that. Should they be stumping for that?

It's not a bad idea to stump for those things, Paul, but we're talking about the entire American public, and the Trump accounts for a thousand dollars for kids born recently, a good idea, but it is not going to affect the majority or most of the country. And he's also talking about a thousand dollars IRS checks being sent back to people, which is nice, but typically that sort of thing does not really change people's minds. What people are focused on when they think about the economy are two things: their income, which they would like to see maintained or grow, not be eroded by inflation; and jobs, the idea that you've got a paying job that you can go to, or there's opportunity for people you know to get jobs. That was the first Trump term, when jobs were being created and people were really pretty enthusiastic about their prospects. I would agree with Kim that maybe the one thing that has gotten in the way of all this is the tariff variability. There's just so much talk about tariffs, and whether tariffs are on or off with Canada, the Europeans and so forth. I think if the President would simply try to rationalize the tariff policy and not let it get in front of his economy and create the uncertainty that hangs over people, companies trying to make investments based on what their prospects are going forward, that would help a lot to try to lift the economy and allow companies, corporations, to hire with some confidence about the future.

Jason, several officials in the administration I talked to last summer are saying, "Well, Paul, just wait. After, you know, the November or so and the Virginia and New Jersey elections, President will calm down on tariffs," and that really hasn't happened. Instead, what you're seeing is he has, in addition to some of the things that Kim talked and Dan talked about, he is focusing on some really populist ideas-

Right, mm-hm.

Picking up, frankly from the Democrats, 10% cap on credit card interest, for example, or some more housing subsidies. What do you make of those?

I don't think that they're going to get the job done, Paul, in the long run. You're also hearing officials like Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent say "Be patient in terms of the tax reforms and the big beautiful bill kicking in in 2026." But I just don't think there's a lot of bang there. You talk about things like the Trump accounts or things like the refunds that are coming, you know, there's gonna be a considerable period of time between people receiving these refunds and people heading to the ballot box in the November elections, and it's quite possible that whatever refund they get that sugar high will have worn off by then, particularly, if there's still inflation up there gobbling up their purchasing power. And this gets back again to the tariffs creating the headwinds here that make it difficult for the rest of the economy to do what it needs to do to get people to feel more confident. Businesses have all of this uncertainty out there: "Should we hire, should we lay off, should we give wages?" They want certainty, and that certainty is what will lead to confidence in the economy from the general public. So, I don't think it's a matter of time before, you know, the tariff kicks in or these other policies and the big beautiful bill kick in, the tariffs are a big problem here.

Kim, briefly, one question: if the Supreme Court strikes down the President's emergency tariffs, how do you think he'll respond? Will he take that as a lesson to slow down on tariffs or double down?

Look, that's gonna be a huge moment, Paul, and his temptation, if they strike them down, is going to be to lash out and begin again with a whole different round. The wiser course would be to take it as a moment to settle things down and really focus on the stuff they've accomplished.
