WSJ Opinion: Will Michigan's Democrats Choose Socialism?

Welcome to the "Journal Editorial Report". I'm Paul Gigot. The battle for the future of the Democratic Party is heating up ahead of Tuesday's closely watched Senate primary in Michigan as a new poll finds far left candidate Abdul El-Sayed with a double-digit lead over establishment favorite Haley Stevens in a race that could determine control of the US Senate. The showdown comes as more moderate Democrats scramble to distance themselves from the party's progressive wing and the Democratic Socialists of America in particular after their co-chair appeared on Fox News Sunday to defend the organization's platform.

Abolish the Senate.

True.

Okay, replace the presidency and Supreme Court as we now know them.

Yep.

Abolish ICE.

Absolutely.

Abolish borders and give amnesty to anyone currently in the US illegally.

As a long-term plan, yep.

Defund the Pentagon.

Absolutely.

Abolish prisons, at least in large part.

Yeah, again, that as part of a long-term program, yeah.

Okay, so no prisons. Government or public ownership of most large corporations.

Yeah, absolutely.

Let's bring in our panel, longtime "Wall Street Journal" columnist Dan Henninger, columnist Allysia Finley, and Editorial board member, Kyle Peterson. So Dan, that is some agenda.

Yes.

And we give her credit for being forthright. I mean.

Absolutely.

But, you know, what does that say, that they are willing to be that forthright about the strength of the socialists in the Democratic Party?

Well, it does say for one thing that there has been a huge intellectual and political vacuum inside the established Democratic Party. I mean, when we sometimes have these conversations about Republicans versus the Democrats, and you say that Democrats are gonna win the midterm elections. And then you turn to who the Democrats have to offer, and the answer is usually no ideas and no real national leadership. So in step these socialists with new ideas at least, and most of their candidates are fairly attractive, they're articulate, and they're gaining support. Having said that, what she was just saying, the support for defunding the Pentagon, emptying the prisons and so forth, this is what socialists and the progressives believe. Remember, we had things like the progressive prosecutor, George Gascon in Los Angeles who was in favor of cashless bail, letting people out. They do not change their minds. They genuinely believe these things. And the question is, can they run in these elections now like El-Sayed running in Michigan who claims to understand capitalism and get away with that? Because the fact is that once in office, like Zohran Mamdani in New York, they will pursue that progressive socialist agenda.

Well Kyle, are the Democrats pushing back on this in a forthright way? I mean, John Fetterman is, the Pennsylvania Senator. Rahm Emanuel is, the former Chicago mayor. But I think a lot, I see many Democrats kind of cowering here under, going undercover trying not to say anything because it might alienate some of those left-wing voters they want to vote for them in the election. What do you think?

Yeah, I think that's absolutely right. That's the dynamic of these party primaries. I mean, look at Haley Stevens. She is not a real centrist candidate. She wants higher taxes on the wealthy. She introduced a bill to create a special prosecutor to investigate ICE agents who are accused of wrongdoing. She wants to take the country to the left. But the problem is Democrats don't seem willing or able to make the argument against socialism for its own sake. So Abdul El-Sayed, for example, is for Medicare for all. Huge opening for a candidate, a Republican candidate, if it has to be, to say, listen, if you have any kind of private health plan in the state of Michigan this guy wants to make that plan illegal and take it away from you. But that is not an argument that Democrats seem comfortable making inside the context of these party primaries.

Allysia, Abdul El-Sayed is leading really by a comfortable margin in the latest poll. Do you think he's going to win this primary on Tuesday? And then what does that mean for the general election? Does that increase the odds that Mike Rogers, the Republican candidate, can actually regain that seat from the current Democratic hold?

Right, so if you look at most of the polls in the last couple of weeks, El-Sayed has really surged in part because I think Republicans have actually put in money to help boost him because they think he's an easier candidate to beat. Now, I think you also have to look at the polls and the details, and it actually shows that he doesn't have much support among working class people. And in particular, Haley Stevens is actually backed by Black voters, which I think shows the division between upper class progressives and then the working class. So I think it definitely would behoove Republicans if he were to win the primary on Tuesday. And I think he definitely looks as if he is going to.

Well, you're saying that El-Sayed is leading among white voters, particularly younger voters?

He's predominantly leading. Right, he has a 30 point advantage among white voters, but is down by about 30 points among Black voters, which I really think shows a disconnect or a division within the Democratic Party. And I think that's partly on social grounds and that the working class people, and some of them have migrated to Republicans, by the way, in recent elections. But working class people feel very differently about these issues like defunding ICE and the police than the upper class elites like El-Sayed who has four advanced degrees.

To Dan, let's say El-Sayed wins. Chuck Schumer and the Democratic establishment roll behind him with all their money?
