South Korea’s Impeached President Removed From Office

Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was ousted. This is a result of a constitutional court decision. The judges ruled today that he should be removed. This comes at a very sensitive time for Seoul. They have just been hit with new Trump tariffs. China is also trying to reach out with overtures to partner up on supply chain, and North Korea has remained and deepened its nuclear threat. We saw tens of thousands of South Koreans congregate in downtown Seoul, and that type of mass rally, mass protest is unlikely to subside anytime soon. More than 10% of the country's law enforcement has been dispatched on the streets. They've closed the surrounding areas with the court. This reflects the anger and the divisiveness in South Korean politics today. This comes more than four months after Yoon, in a shock declaration, imposed martial law on the country. What happens next is a snap election that will occur within 60 days. As it stands today, there's a clear front runner, opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung. In polls, he has more than 1/3 of support. The conservatives meanwhile have yet to rally around a single candidate. Lee Jae-myung is a political survivor, both literally and figuratively. In 2022, he lost a razor thin race against President Yeol. Last year, he survived an assassination attempt where an assailant stabbed him in the neck, requiring emergency surgery. He stands trial with five different cases, which include perjury and election law violations. If he's found guilty in any of these cases, it would eliminate him from running for office. South Korea is in a very vulnerable moment. The country has been in a state of paralysis since Yeol's martial law declaration in early December. So the country is needing direction, clarity on what strategies, what tactics they need to take to compete in this new world.
