WSJ Columnist's First Impressions of Apple's New iPhone 17e and MacBook Neo

Affordable and Apple don't usually go together in the same sentence, but this week, the company unveiled two devices that are kind of affordable. There's the iPhone 17e, price 599, and the MacBook Neo, also 599. Not exactly cheap, but again, this is Apple. The budget iPhone 17e finally works with MagSafe magnetic snap-on accessories and has a stronger display glass. Here's how it compares to the iPhone 17 for $200 more. The three biggest differences are the camera, the screen, and battery life. iPhone economics 101, the more you pay, the more cameras you get. The iPhone 17e has just one rear camera. The iPhone 17 has two, the standard plus the ultra wide. Now the display, the 17e has the old school notch. The 17 has the new school Dynamic Island. The 17 also has an always on display and a brighter screen with smoother scrolling. The 17e doesn't have either of those. Then battery life, the iPhone 17e is rated at 26 hours of video playback versus the iPhone 17's 30 hours. Next step, the MacBook Neo, it's the new lightweight, colorful, low-end laptop option. The latest M5 MacBook Air was just announced for $1,099, which makes the new MacBook Neo seem like an even better deal. So what are you leaving on the table by saving $500? Power, ports and some other smaller compromises. The Neo is a Mac that runs on an iPhone chip, the A18 Pro, a previous generation processor that powered the iPhone 16 Pro and Neo is limited to eight gigabytes of RAM. The MacBook Air has a more powerful M5 chip, plus 16 gigabytes of RAM. The MacBook Air has a dedicated MagSafe port for charging plus two high-speed USBC ports. The Neo has just two USBC ports and only one works with external displays. There's no backlit keyboard and you have to upgrade to the 512 gigabyte 699 version for touch ID. This track pad, which is tactile instead of haptic like Mac Air, the screen is smaller, but it feels just as heavy as the Air. Also, the color of the keys match the MacBook, if that's something you care about, and I think it's something I care about. In general, it seems like people are feeling the squeeze from inflation and tariffs. Analysts say Apple is trying to meet the economic realities of the moment.
