From Tension to Flattery: The Trump-Lee Talks Explained

It's an honor to be with President Lee of South Korea. We've known each other and gotten along very well.

The day had started ominously for South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, making his first visit to the White House to meet President Trump. There have been a message from President Trump on Truth Social asking what's going on in South Korea. This is a purge or revolution? And that had put Seoul officials on edge before this critical meeting for President Lee, who had only taken office in early June. His presidency had been building to this moment at the White House. The Summit had the potential to really air some dirty laundry between the two countries. But what emerged was actually very close ties between the two leaders. There was a charm offensive clearly by Seoul. President Lee thanked and complimented and praised President Trump for his role in global leadership. The Trump-Lee Summit wasn't only about feelings, however. There was lots of business that happened.

Yeah, I think we have a deal done. They had some problems with it, but we stuck to our guns. We are going to, they're gonna make the deal that they agreed to make.

Timothy: The two countries have a trade pact where South Korea has pledged $350 billion in investments in the US. We saw Korean Air pledge to buy more than 100 new jets from Boeing. We saw Hyundai add even more investment into the US. They had pledged $21 billion previously. They added another 5 billion for things like robotics and autos, adding tens of thousands of US jobs. And we have seen a continuation of shipbuilding with a new deal struck in the aftermath of the summit where Samsung Heavy Industries, one of the country's big ship builders has said it will repair American naval vessels. He was not at the Trump-Lee Summit, but one person who came up very frequently at the White House was North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Reporter: He said the North Korean leader wants to meet. How soon would you?

Yeah, we wanna have a meeting. I like to have a meeting. I get along great with him.

Trump reiterated a pledge to meet with Kim and suggested it could happen as early as this year. President Lee said President Trump can be the peacemaker. I will help as South Korean leader as the pacemaker. This comes at a sensitive time between the two Koreas and also America's relationship with North Korea. The two sides have not held formal talks in years, but Trump's remarks today could have Kim Jong Un think, "Should I try to recapture this type of diplomacy I had with Trump in 2018 and 2019?" when they met in Singapore, Vietnam, and at the DMZ.

I think South Koreans had been very anxious, nervous about the type of threats or pain that could be exacted by the US and Trump. And I think the way this summit went today, which had more smiles than surprises, I think will give South Koreans some degree of comfort.
