Greenland Dispatch: Unpacking Claims of U.S. Secret Influence Campaign

I am currently on my way to Greenland, an autonomous territory that President Trump has long said he wants to control. That desire has sparked international tension with the US' old ally, Denmark, tensions that have now been reignited by allegations of a covert American influence campaign in Greenland.

So of course you cannot spy against an ally.

We need Greenland and the world needs us to have Greenland, including Denmark.

According to these allegations, a group of men with links to the President and in positions to influence your security policy are trying to sew divisions between Denmark and Greenland, and even to recruit members to a separatist movement.

It's a strange time for us in Greenland.

Now, after these allegations, the Danish foreign ministry has summoned the top US diplomat in Copenhagen for talks. It did the same in May after the Wall Street Journal article disclosed that Trump had asked the intelligence community to step up efforts to collect information in Greenland, particularly about people who might be supportive of the president's objectives on the island.

But we need it really for international world security, and I think we're gonna get it. One way or the other, we're gonna get it.

President Trump has different reasons to desire Greenland. The island is rich in mineral resources, but it also holds an extremely important strategic location in the Arctic. It's home, for example, to the northern most US military installation in the world called Pituffik Space Base.

That's where I'm headed now to see just how strategically important the Arctic is, but also to look at some of the challenges that comes with refueling, resupplying and basically operating a military base in the Arctic. And that's something that will only become more important as the Arctic continues to be seen as a node and a potential conflict between the West and Russia or China. And that's why I don't think we should expect Trump's interest in Greenland to go away anytime soon.
