How Charlie Kirk’s Death Is Fueling the U.K.’s Free Speech Fight

Narrator: Charlie Kirk's death has become a rallying point in the United Kingdom. His influence was on display during a demonstration billed as a free speech festival by its far right organizer, Tommy Robinson.

Charlie Kirk's legacy to us in Great Britain isn't the only reason we have hope.

Narrator: Britain has been locked in a fierce debate over free speech as loosely defined hate speech laws have led to an average of 33 arrests per day.

Strange things are happening over there. They are cracking down.

Narrator: Here's why Kirk's killing is a flashpoint in the UK's struggle to define the boundaries of acceptable speech. Three days after Kirk's death, more than 100,000 Britons marched through the streets of London. The demonstration, which Robinson organized before the fatal shooting, took aim at the UK's current Labour government.

They have attacked the family, they've attacked Christianity, they've opened the borders, they've flooded our nations. We are the start of a counter revolution.

Tommy Robinson kind of represents the more violent-prone nationalist, white nationalist version of the right that's worried about immigration and cultural change in the UK.

Narrator: Kirk's name and image were evoked throughout the more than five-hour-long rally.

The murder of Charlie Kirk is the turning point for this fight.

The fact that Charlie Kirk did try to make dialogue a key part of his political brand and was killed by an intolerance and unwillingness to listen to that dialogue, I think has resonated with a lot of Brits and fed concerns on the right here that freedom of speech in Britain is also under attack.

Narrator: Elon Musk, who's been a vocal critic of the state of free speech in the UK, joined virtually, calling out what he said was the left's celebration of Kirk's death.

The left is the party of murder and celebrating murder. I mean, let that sink in for a minute.

Narrator: The previous day, mourners had gathered for a vigil hosted by Turning Point UK, the British offshoot of Kirk's US organization. This is not just a moment for the US, this is a moment for Britain.

Narrator: The reaction to Kirk's death underscored the global reach of his voice, which had already found young audiences at British universities. Earlier this year, he embarked on campus tours in the UK, which he described as a totalitarian third world hellhole.

Free speech is a birthright that you gave us, and you guys decided not to codify it, and now it's poof, it's basically gone.

In many ways, our modern democracy, capitalism, a lot of ideas we get come from Britain and from the British Enlightenment. So these ideas started in Britain, but unlike the US, which has a constitution, so you might have an amendment that protects the right to free speech, which is the First Amendment, in Britain, you don't have a codified constitution. So it's really down to norms and legal practice as an interpretation.

Narrator: Last year, a 41-year-old nanny in central England was jailed because of a message she posted on X. Lucy Connolly was at her home when news broke that three young girls were murdered by a knife-wielding man at a dance workshop.

She's also a mother who lost a child. So she I think has a lot of empathy for parents who have lost children. So in sort of a fit of anger at having seen this, she also saw online crucially mistaken reports that the attacker was an asylum seeker.

Narrator: Connolly called for mass deportation and to set fire to hotels housing immigrants. A few hours later, she deleted the post. Anger over the attack and misinformation online led to days of riots. Connolly received a 31-month prison sentence for publishing material intending to stir up racial hatred.

To Americanize, that seemed like a very extreme response to someone's tweet. If somebody goes out and tries to burn a hotel, well, you arrest them. But calling for something and being arrested is a line that that the Brits say is worth it because it's against hate speech that in America would not be considered hate speech.

Narrator: In September, Irish comedy writer Graham Linehan said he was arrested at Heathrow Airport and questioned for several hours over an X post he sent while in the US. Linehan said trans women who use women-only facilities were committing a violent, abusive act and people should punch them if calling police under the measures failed to stop them.

Again, people are saying, "Well, Hang on a minute, you can be tweeting something in the States and arrive to the UK and be arrested for it?" So I think that also caused kind of a big outcry.

Narrator: Free speech advocates were also worried about the UK government's plans to make anti-Muslim rhetoric a hate crime, which critics worry will criminalize criticism of Islam. Cases like these are partly why President Trump has criticized the state of free speech in the UK.

Well, free speech is very important. I don't know if you're referring to any place in particular. Perhaps they are, but--

We've had free speech for a very, very long time here, so we're very proud about that.

Narrator: Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defended UK laws aimed at holding tech companies accountable for harmful content online. The UK's Online Safety Act, which went into effect in July, requires platforms to verify users' ages before showing some content, like pornography. Tech companies say the restrictions are too broad and forces people to verify their ages, and give up personal information to access sites like X.

We're not censoring anyone. We've got some measures which are there to protect children.

Narrator: Critics note that President Trump and his administration have gone after free speech they disapprove of, including detaining foreign students for protesting and filing lawsuits against media organizations. Despite this, Republican lawmakers have sharply criticized the UK government and elevated figures, like Nigel Farage. The British Member of Parliament and leader of the right wing Reform UK party recently appeared before a House committee where he took aim at what he called Britain's awful authoritarian situation.
